5 Grade - Multiplication Lesson - Assessment and Evaluation

This document summarizes a 5th grade math lesson on multiplication and an assessment of student understanding. It provides details on each student's performance on various multiplication tasks and their ability to articulate the definition of and need for multiplication. Overall, most students were able to correctly complete tasks and represent multiplication visually, though some struggled to explain the real-world importance of multiplication beyond math class.

Mia exceeded expectations for most tasks done throughout this lesson. Her work is exceptional and participates a lot throughout the lesson. However, she did not fully articulate why multiplication is important in the real world. She did talk about how multiplication is needed for division. Ahzir is deemed one of the lowest performers in math class. In this lesson, he did try his best to participate and share his answers. While he met most of my expectations, he did not quite understand the definition of multiplication. He kept saying because it has the times table sign instead on focusing on repeated addition. Additionally, he is currently making a lot mistakes when he skip counts even the 2s. Regardless, he can still draw the pictures and make

his own equations based on the pictures. Ahzirs biggest strength was finding the patterns on the multiplication cart. He pointed out number patterns that I did not even notice the first time. While Keneisha was able to draw out representations of equations and create her own number sentences, she did not quite understand the concept that there were 5 paper clips in each bag. She said there were only 6 bags and 5 paper clips in it. She was able to describe it, but not say it out right through conversation. Also, for the importance of multiplication she also related it to math concepts in school and not to the real world. Keneisha needs to work on participation, but that will grow over time as I create a safe environment for learning. Jasmine hit all the learning targets and exceeded my expectations for most categories. I wished she just spoke up a little bit more through discussion. Her work was very neat and even showed other ways to solving the problem in the hook. Yeshua participated a lot throughout the lesson. It was clear to me that he at least understood the definition of multiplication and its relation to math concepts. However, he was unclear about how its importance to the real world. Just like Ahzir, Yeshua

was able to find his own patterns than the one I originally showed. Kyla was definitely the shyest student in the group. She did offer her answer up a few times throughout the lesson. I wanted her to raise her hand more and be able to share her answers. I think because she is a new student at RBCS this affected her participation. Kyla did understand the definition of multiplication and was able to represent it visually but was not able to clearly articulate her responses. She made verbal mistakes when skip counting. Additionally, she didnt quite say why multiplication was important in the context of the real world just in math class.
