Qualitative Quantitative: Science Lesson I. Review

This document outlines a science lesson on cells given by Mr. Zarate. It includes a review of qualitative and quantitative observations of cells under a microscope. Students then observe their own cheek cells under the microscope after collecting a sample with a toothpick and staining it with iodine/methylene blue. They describe their observations, label the key parts of the cell, and explain why the stain was used.

3) Now, with your partner. I want you to both come up with a

definition for a cell based on the observations you made. We will
share these out loud. Write it below.
A cell is ___________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________
4) There are three main parts to the cell:
cell membrane:

cytoplasm: ____________________________________________
nucleus:

Cheek Cell Activity

Now that we have discussed the definition of cells and the observations, we
are going to perform a lab where we observe our OWN cheek cells. Listen
up for directions.
1) On your table, you should have:
a microscope
a slide and cover slide
a toothpick
2) I am going to come around and put a drop of iodine/methylene blue on
your slide. While Im coming around, THINK about why am I putting this on
the slide.
3) Once I put the drop on your slide, take the toothpick and gently scrape
the inside of your cheek.
4) Place that part of the toothpick and mix it with the drop.
5) Now using the knob low/high power (Ill show you) try and find a clear
picture of it. If you need help, raise your hand.
ONCE YOU FIND IT. TURN THIS AROUND AND START ANSWERING THE
QUESTIONS ABOUT IT.

1. Draw what you see on the slides.

Name some observations you saw in the slides.
