The American Colonies and Immigration

Directions: Read the passage below and answer the questions below it.
A. Some of the first immigrants to come to the United States were the colonists from Europe. This is over 100 years before the Industrial Era. In reality, different religious and cultural groups set up the 13 colonies in America. The Quakers (a religious group) were one of the most despised (frowned upon) religious groups in England. The Quakers in England refused to bow to nobles (government officials) and they also spoke out against all war and refused to serve in the army. King Charles II was infuriated (angry) with the Quakers and issued a charter so that they could have land in North America. The King named the colony Pennsylvania and allowed the Quakers to settle in it. 1) What is one reason that the Quakers came to America? ______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ 2) Is your answer to question #1 a push or a pull factor? _____________________________________ 3) How do you know? ______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ 4) Who settled and started the Pennsylvania colony? ______________________ ______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________

Newspaper Editorial of a Nativist These newer immigrants need to return to the place they came from. They work for far less money than we who have been here longer than them and it ruins the labor market. I am so glad that Congress is going to pass an immigration restrictionwe do not want you all hereanyone in support of not restricting immigration is a fool. America is a great place of plenty and these immigrants are turning it into a cheap labor market. My brothers and I will not hesitate to use violence against these labor-mongers who are taking our jobs Source: Anonymous Based on the text above, what are two reasons that the nativist is displeased with immigration? 1.______________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________(2) 2.______________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________(2)

Inventions of the Industrial Era

McCormick Reaper

Cyrus McCormick of Virginia was responsible for liberating farm workers from hours of back-breaking labor by introducing the farmers to his newly invented mechanical reaper in July, 1831. By 1847, Cyrus McCormick began the mass manufacture of his reaper in a Chicago factory. Light bulb
The modern world is an electrified world. The light bulb, in particular, profoundly changed human existence by illuminating the night and making it hospitable to a wide range of human activity. The electric light, one of the everyday conveniences that most affects our lives, was invented in 1879 by Thomas Alva Edison. He was neither the first nor the only person trying to invent an incandescent light bulb.

Telegraph
In 1809, a crude telegraph was invented in Bavaria by Samuel Soemmering. He used 35 wires with gold electrodes in water and at the receiving end 2000 feet the message was read by the amount of gas caused by electrolysis. In 1828, the first telegraph in the USA. was invented by Harrison Dyar who sent electrical sparks through chemically treated paper tape to burn dots and dashes. The telegraph would later be modified to send electric signals and enable people to communicate with one another over long distances. Remember at this time in history phones had not been invented.

The first automobile to be produced in quantity was the 1901 Curved Dash Oldsmobile, which was built in the United States by Ransom E. Olds. Modern automobile mass production, and its use of the modern industrial assembly line, is credited to Henry Ford of Detroit, Michigan, who had built his first gasoline-powered car in 1896. Ford began producing his Model T in 1908, and by 1927, when it was discontinued, over 18 million had rolled off the assembly line.

TIMELINE ACTIVITY

Directions: Make a timeline in the space below of each of the inventions on the
previous page that has the year they were invented on the bottom side of the timeline and the invention on the top of the timeline. Once you have finished the timeline below, place it on a flashcard and study it. Bring that flashcard to class on Tuesday-it is worth 10 points in addition to 10 points for this whole review.
