Abstract Islam is a civil religion and the same aspect has helped the Islamic culture and civilization grow and expand unparallel. During the early Islamic centuries i.e. until about 6th century Hijri, creative face and Islamic vision went all along and that was the time when dynamism of Islamic cities, with respect to rich Islamic culture, became evident. During that period, science, art and craft were blossoming on the entire conquered Muslim land. Rise of Islam was the beginning of great human civilization. This divine religion, apart from cultural encouragement to human races, caused the emergence and divulgence of modern civilization around the world. The growth and expansion of Islam to the far-flung points led to the creation of big cities. As a complete and comprehensive ideology, Islamic Civilization influenced all dimension of social and human life. With the arrival of Islam to the conquered land, for various regions, they felt the need to establish new cities for settling down Muslim population and occasionally for military encampments. By this way, cities came into being in Islamic domain. Urbanization in the Islamic empire grew from 3rd century and reached to the utmost level three centuries later. Islam transformed not only the ancient cities but caused the growth of new ones with Islamic characteristics. Victories of Arabs in West Africa during 7th and 8th centuries AD led to the emergence of Islamic civilization as well as new cities in this continent. Through descriptive-analytical method as well as based on available library resources, the current paper tries to study as how and why cities sprang up in Africa (including cities of Morocco, Cyrene, Fez and Sjlmas that have historical importance in Africa) during different historical periods of Monotheists, Marabouts, Fatemids, Idrisis etc. Keywords: City and urbanization, Africa, Islamic period.
