    Rizal faced many setbacks and challenges in Madrid from 1890-1891. He was unable to secure justice for his family and the oppressed tenants in Calamba through meetings with government ministers and the Spanish press. He received bad news that his family had been deported and ejected from their home. Rizal considered duels with two men who had wronged or insulted him but both duels were aborted. He turned down a leadership position within the Filipino community in Madrid to avoid further disunity between his supporters and those of Del Pilar. By early 1891, Rizal decided to leave Madrid for good.
