    Ilang and Edo were in love but forbidden from seeing each other by Ilang's parents who wanted her to marry a rich suitor instead of the poor farmer Edo. When Ilang's father discovered their secret meetings by the forest stream, he prevented Ilang from leaving home. Heartbroken, Ilang became ill and died, asking to be buried by the stream. Grieving, Edo focused his love on a tree that grew at Ilang's grave. When the tree began releasing a lovely fragrance, the people discovered Edo had died at its base, crying out Ilang's name. In memory of their story, the town named the fragrant tree the ilang-ilang.

    HOW ILANG-ILANG GOT ITS NAME (Quezon) Region IV Two souls with but a single thought; two hearts

    In the town of Tayabas, the prettiest was one named Ilang. She was idolized by her suitors who promised to give her all the comforts of life, but she gave her heart to a poor farmer named Edo. Ilangs parents did not like Edo. And so they forbade her to see Edo. They told her to choose a husband among her rich suitors. Ilang and Edo devised a way to see each other. They secretly met at the edge of the forest when Ilang fetched water from the stream. At these meetings, they vowed to love each other come what may. At home, Ilang remained silent whenever her parents talked about her other suitors. Her silence made her father suspicious that she still loved Edo. One day, her father followed when she went to fetch water. He saw Edo waiting near the stream. That was the last time Ilang and Edo saw each other. From that day on, Ilangs parents never allowed her to leave the house. Ilang felt sad and miserable. She refused to eat. She would rather die than marry one of her rich suitors. She became sick and got weaker and weaker. She thought only of Edo. Before she died, she begged her parents to bury her at the edge of the forest near the stream. Edo focused his love to the plant until it grew into a tall, graceful tree. Every day Edo visited, caressed and talked to it. It made him glad Visiting Ilangs grave and tree. One morning, the people woke up to a lovely fragrance. It came from the edge of the forest near the stream. They went looking for the sources scent and found the strange, leafslike blossoms of the tree. Then they noticed Edo crumpled at the foot of the tree, crying, Ilang, Ilang, Ilang.. Edo died that same morning. The people remembered his last words and from then called that tee and its fragrant ilang- ilang.
