Course Content: I Introduction: Components of environment, types of microbes, growth & their role in environment. II Quality and Quantity of Water: Sources of water, assessment of domestic and industrial requirement, impurities in water, Indian standards for drinking water, water borne diseases and their control. III Characteristics of Waste Water: Physical, chemical & biological characteristics of domestic and industrial wastewater. IV Natural Methods of Waste Water Disposal: Different waste water disposal techniques and their merits & demerits, Indian standards of disposal into rivers, self purification of natural streams, oxygen sag analysis, mathematical analysis ( Streeter phelps equation). V Solid Waste Management System: Quantity, composition and characteristics of solid waste, methods of solid waste collection, conveyance, treatment and disposal. VI House Drainage and Ventilation: Principles of house drainage, pipes & traps, Classification of traps, nahni traps, gulley traps, interception traps, grease traps, sanitary fittings, system of plumbing, house drainage plan. Ventilation of drainage system. Objects of ventilation, quantity of air required, comfort by ventilation, natural system, plenum system, vacuum system, balance system, air conditioning and lighting. VII Air Pollution: Definition, composition of atmospheric air, classification and sources of air pollutants. Effects of air pollution on human, plant and material, air pollution control methods, equipments and safety. VIII Noise Pollution: Measurement of sound, sources, effects and control of noise pollution. IX Introduction to Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Audit Term Work Term work shall be based on the above mentioned course content.
