I am excited to be back home and we need your support

It is great to write again to my Blues brothers, and I start with a question: How would you feel if Mr Abramovich asked you to manage and coach our first team? How would you feel as aChelseasupporter? Proud? Excited? Motivated? Ready? That is exactly what I felt. That is why I introduced myself as the Happy One, that is exactly what I feel every day when I drive to Cobham or toStamfordBridge. I am at home again; I am where I want to be again; I am, once again, in a club that is much more than my club it is also a passion. A passion that I share with every one of you. This summer, the boss celebrates 10 years of amazing work at his club. I celebrate my return, but this match is not a testimonial! This match is Premier League: Day One, against a team full of confidence because they have just gained automatic promotion; a team led by my friend Steve Bruce and supported by a few thousand fans in the away end, all of them with the mentality they created last season play to win; play to get a result. I congratulate them all and I wish them a great season in the Premier League, and I tell every one of you that this match will be a hard one this match demands from us all that we can give. That is why I ask, in a humble way, for your support to our team. We need you. We need your support. We welcome to the club our new players Andre Schurrle, Marco van Ginkel,Kevin De Bruyneand Mark Schwarzer. Mark is an experienced goalkeeper and the other boys are young they need our support as they settle down. We will support them technically and you can support them emotionally to feel that they belong atChelsea. We need to feel thatStamford Bridgeis together, creating a great football atmosphere, an atmosphere that everyone enjoys, but where our opponents feel they are not playing against 11 they are playing against 40,000.

Raring to get going and were ready on all fronts

Welcome back to Stamford Bridge for the first game of the season and I dont think any of us can wait to get going. Jos coming back in as manager has given us all a huge lift. He created a team that brought great success to Chelsea, after we had gone so long without a league title, and its great to have him back I know all you supporters feel the same. We want to kick on again this season and we have got a great squad that is capable of competing for honours on all fronts. With Andre Schurrle, Marco van Ginkel and Mark Schwarzer coming in, we have strengthened the squad yet again, while the return of Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku from their loan spells gives us even more options in attacking areas, so we are prepared for whatever the season throws at us. We have been working hard in preseason to be ready to hit the ground running and we will be on it from the first whistle today. On the final day of last season, we said goodbye to Paulo Ferreira, who we will all miss. What a pro! In nine years here, he played in some of the most important games in the clubs history and won more or less everything there is to win. On behalf of everyone here, I want to wish him all the best for the future and tell him that we love him. Over the summer, we celebrated a decade under Roman Abramovichs ownership and it has been an incredible 10 years. We have made history and had some unforgettable moments in all competitions, not to mention the amount of silverware and great players that have come to this club, since he arrived in July 2003. Thank you, Mr Abramovich, and heres to many more years of success! We face Hull today and they come here newly promoted, under an experienced manager in Steve Bruce and keen to make their mark on the Premier League as soon as possible. We are prepared for that and we will give our all to start the season with a win and a good win at that. Come on the Chels!

We Want to kick on again. We have got a great squad capable of competing for honours on all fronts

Elsewhere, there were no less than four Blues in the Belgium starting line-up for their 0-0 draw with France, as Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne and Thibaut Courtois who is currently on loan with Atletico Madrid were all selected. Victor Moses helped Nigeria to a 2-0 win over South Africa, while there were also starts for Oscar and Branislav Ivanovic, for Brazil and Serbia respectively.

Five summer signings

Chelsea added ve new players to our squad over the summer, with Andre Schurrle, Marco van Ginkel, Mark Schwarzer, Cristian Cuevas and Stipe Perica all joining the Blues. Forward Schurrle was the rst man to arrive at Stamford Bridge, signing a ve-year contract after completing his move from Bayer Leverkusen. The 22-year-old German international has already scored for Chelsea, in our pre-season game against AC Milan. Van Ginkel also agreed a deal until 2018. The midelder graduated from the youth team at Vitesse Arnhem and played a key role for Holland at this years European Under-21 Championship. Former Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer has joined on a oneyear contract and brings a wealth of experience with more than 500 Premier League appearances and 100 international caps to his name. Cuevas arrived from OHiggins on a ve-year deal after impressing for Chile at the Under-20 World Cup, a tournament that also saw Perica in action for Croatia ahead of his move from NK Zadar. The summer also saw Chelsea say goodbye to ve players, with Paulo Ferreira, Florent Malouda, Ross Turnbull and Yossi Benayoun departing when their contracts expired, while Jeffrey Bruma completed a move to PSV Eindhoven.

PLENTY OF FOOD FOR THOUGHT

This season there are once again four options available for refreshments in the concourses at Stamford Bridge. With the quick-service drinks at the Singha Bar and the wide range of food available from the Traditional, Super Sub Roast and The Shed food vendors, all tastes are covered. From football ground staples like hotdogs and pies to more unusual offerings, including corn on the cob and chicken noodle hot pot, theres plenty to choose from. You can also avoid the queues by purchasing express tokens from promotional staff around the stadium and in the concourses as well as taking advantage of special offers by visiting www.vouchercloud.com.

Trio agree new contracts

Goalkeeper Henrique Hilario, versatile youngster Nathan Ake and teenage midelder Lewis Baker have all committed their future to Chelsea by agreeing new contracts. Portuguese shot-stopper Hilario has signed a deal for one season, having previously made 39 appearances in his seven years with the Blues. Dutchman Ake agreed a contract that will keep him with the club until 2018, following a breakthrough 2012/13 season which saw him make his rst-team debut in the Premier League as well as representing the senior side in the FA Cup and Europa League. Bakers new deal will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2016. The 18-yearold joined the Chelsea Academy at Under-10s level and recently made his debut for the England Under-19 side. He was a regular last season for the Blues Under-21s as well as in the FA Youth Cup and NextGen Series.

A complete set of matchday programmes from the season of the Blues first-ever league title has been donated to the Chelsea Museum. Derek Mason followed the team during that campaign and built up a compilation of programmes from every home game and the majority of away trips before some generous fellow fans helped him finish off his impressive collection in later years. The lifelong fan then donated the entire lot to the museum this year, but not before combining them into the limited edition Champions book, which has raised tens of thousands of pounds for the Past Players Trust so far. A few copies of the book are still available at the reduced price of 25 from the Megastore at Stamford Bridge or by emailing pat.saville@ frankham.com.

Perfect 10 with adidas

Chelsea and adidas announced the extension of our global partnership ahead of revealing the new third kit to be worn by the team during the 2013/14 season. The deal demonstrates a significant step forward in our partnership and it will see the sports brand continue as our official kit supplier and sponsor for the next 10 years. Ron Gourlay, Chelsea Football Clubs Chief Executive, said: We are delighted to extend our partnership until 2023 after a highly successful first seven seasons. Both organisations share the same ethos and ambition and the new deal reaffirms adidass belief in the clubs stature in world football. The third kit has a futuristic theme, with a design that includes sleek matt black-on-black prints lining a mesh panel as well as metallic silver styling on adidas famous three stripes on the sleeve and a black-and-silver finish to the Chelsea badge. The Under-21s played Spurs at the Recreation Ground

Aldershot to host Academy matches

Chelseas opening game of the Under-21 Premier League season against Spurs was the first of 25 matches our Academy teams will play at the Recreation Ground this season. Due to the increased number of competitions and fixtures the club will compete in below senior level, a twoyear agreement has been reached with Skrill Premier club Aldershot Town for our Under-21s and Under-19s to use their ground. Located between Hampshire and Surrey, the venue has already proven a popular choice. A large crowd saw our Under-21s host Spurs in their first competitive match of 2013/14, with the numbers bolstered further by an initiative giving free entry to fans for the game. As well as games at the Recreation Ground, Under-21 fixtures will also be played at Stamford Bridge. The first one is at 2pm on 24 August against Leicester City, with another scheduled against Manchester City at 11am on 6 October. We will also continue our link with Brentford and Staines Town, playing Under-18s, Under-21s and Chelsea Ladies games at those grounds. Those fans who have made the trip to Brentfords Griffin Park and Staines Wheatsheaf Park over recent seasons have witnessed some memorable displays by Chelsea sides. Now, the new agreement with Aldershot will give Blues supporters in that area the chance to see the teams in action. For all the latest Academy news, turn to page 44.

Chelsea return to Aldershot, where we played reserve fixtures as recently as 2006/07 before moving to Griffin Park. Chelseas Under-19s also played one NextGen Series game there last season, against Ajax.

GRIFFIN PARK, BRENTFORD

Our Under-21s will again play at Griffin Park, which hosted thrilling matches last term, such as the NextGen Series quarter-final against Juventus. We compete in that tournament in 2013/14 with an Under20s side, while our Under-19s go into the inaugural UEFA Youth League.

WHEATSHEAF PARK, STAINES TOWN

For the past two years, Staines Town has been home to Chelsea Ladies. Wheatsheaf Park has also proved a popular venue for our youth team, who play their home games in the early rounds of the FA Youth Cup there.

kevins next step

After demonstrating his dedication and discipline during one-and-a-half seasons out on loan, Kevin De Bruyne then put in assured displays for Chelsea on our pre-season tour. Now, he is ready to take those attributes into the 2013/14 campaign with the Blues
fter signing from Genk in January 2012, Kevin De Bruyne has had a long wait for his competitive Chelsea debut. However, after an impressive pre-season in Asia and the United States, the Belgian creative midfielder cannot wait to get stuck into his first Premier League campaign. Since he put pen to paper with the Blues, the 22-yearold has continued to develop during two highly promising loan spells, firstly with his former club in his homeland and then with German side Werder Bremen last season. He believes he is improving all the time and that he is more than ready for the next step in his career. I signed a long time ago and so my first competitive game for the club will be a really nice moment, he says as pre-season prepares to give way to the hustle and bustle of the league campaign. Im just looking forward to playing football in competition form again after the summer. Pre-season has been good. I had a little injury at the start, which was a bit of a minus, but the rest has been really good for me. I think I am a different player to last year; I am still young and this pre-season I feel like I have progressed individually and the team collectively which I hope will go into the season. against a Malaysia XI. As his team-mate and compatriot Romelu Lukaku rose to flick an aerial ball towards the edge of the area, De Bruyne accelerated past his marker and muscled his way between two defenders before putting his bootlaces straight through the middle of the ball and watching the net ripple. His bravery came at the cost of a knock, but by the time the team touched down in Washington, DC, for the second part of their pre-season preparation, he was ready for action again. It was in North America where his subtle touches, quick thinking and Beckham-esque crossing were in evidence. He explains he has been helped finding his feet on the pitch by the way he and his fellow new boys have been welcomed into the fold. I feel I have settled in good, he adds, but Im not a person who makes a lot of noise. I am more the easygoing one and I think it is a good group with a lot of people who make more noise than me! Among the more boisterous of his team-mates are his fellow Belgians, Eden Hazard and Lukaku. Although De Bruyne was able to meet most of the current squad when he spent last pre-season with them, he says that it helps

to have some fellow countrymen around as he looks to settle in. I have been playing football with Romelu since I was 14 and Ive known Eden from the youth national team since we were 16, he explains. They were always top of their groups, so it was obvious they had something special to their game. Its always difficult to know for certain, though I saw a lot of good players who dont play football now or who play in the lower divisions. So, in football, you have to work hard and be lucky as well. Those guys always had a bright future and now they are proving it. The connection between Hazard and De Bruyne could be bad news for opponents trying to stop Chelsea from dragging their defenders all over the place between the lines of midfield and attack. Alongside Juan Mata, Oscar, Victor Moses and Andre Schurrle, the Belgian pair form a frightening collection of quick-thinking schemers in the

Blues squad for the coming campaign and it should be quite the spectacle to see them working in tandem. For the creative players who link midfield and attack, some of the most telling movements happen in an instant, a split second in which their body shape shifts and completely changes the complexion of the game before you. It is during these moments that De Bruynes composure ceases to be a mere personality trait and becomes a weapon. That inner calm and self-confidence displayed itself throughout his Bundesliga campaign with Werder Bremen over the past year and was in evidence during pre-season with Chelsea. It allows a player to see clearly where to place the ball, whether that be at the feet of an arriving team-mate or into the bottom corner of the goal. Im always really relaxed, De Bruyne adds. You always need to perform, so it wasnt just because I was coming back to Chelsea that I was working hard last

season. I was just busy helping the team by playing as well as I could. Its always been one of my qualities, I have always been relaxed. Its just my personality and it is how I have grown up in my game. It certainly helped the 22-year-old as he notched up 10 goals and nine assists for a struggling team who came 14th in the German top flight last season. Finishing only a handful of points clear of the relegated sides, Bremen were grateful for his ability to produce the goods under pressure and he was voted the Bundesliga Young Player of the Year on the leagues official website. Now, the Belgian wants to bring that form to the top end of the Premier League. It is always nice when you play good and I couldnt complain, on an individual level, about anything from last season, he explains. I only wish that we had played a little bit better as a team. I always give my best it doesnt matter what the game is. I always try to give my maximum and sometimes that is better than other times. Overall, I learned a lot of things in Germany; I got better in every way and grew as a player. Now, I am really looking forward to starting this season.

Interview | Scott Bonetti

GloRIoUS mEmoRIES SEEN THRoUGH THE CATS EYES

With the opening day of the season finally upon us, we catch up with legendary shot-stopper Peter Bonetti to recall a memorable start to the campaign after England had lifted the World Cup in 1966, when the Blues defeated a West Ham side featuring Three Lions heroes Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters. Considering it is often said that West Ham won the World Cup for England, how did it feel to beat them so soon after the Three Lions greatest moment? Brilliant. After what some of their players had achieved in the summer, everyone was expecting them to win especially as they were at home. However, I went on to have a good game, one of my best for Chelsea. Cookie [Charlie Cooke] had a very good game, too, scoring the winner and giving Bobby moore a lot of problems. Before the match, Id met up with some of the England boys and they kept telling me how they were going to win against us, so after the match I gave them a bit of banter! Also in the Hammers side that day was Peter Brabrook, who had previously played for Chelsea. Did your paths ever cross? I played with him before he moved to West Ham, because I had recently got into the first team for Chelsea. He was a very, very good forward, a very talented player. I got on well with him when he was at Chelsea, but after he moved we obviously drifted apart.

21

PETER BoNETTI

Did the atmosphere among the fans tend to be different on the opening day of the season? Not particularly the fans were always brilliant. I came in as an 18-year-old and was very lucky because they liked my style of goalkeeping. They were very supportive of me and I felt extremely proud to play for them and the club. They chanted my name quite regularly, which gave me a massive boost on matchdays. How about in the changing room does it feel any different ahead of the first game? Everyone tends to be a bit more uptight; no one wants to let the club, the team or the fans down after the hard work of pre-season. Players were a bit more apprehensive. It was, and still is, very important to get off to a winning start. The better the start, the better the momentum. The first match always has a real impact on the dressing room, a win can give you such a boost for the following games. It also sends a message to the rest of the teams in the league about your ambitions for the season.

Looking towards todays game, how does it feel to know Jos Mourinho is leading the team out again today? Absolutely fantastic! Hes done a lot for the club in the past so, hopefully, he can emulate it and even better it. The players all idolise him, so Id imagine its given them a big boost as well. Itll help the younger players a lot, too, as hes a great leader. They only need to look at what hes done both with Chelsea and other clubs to know what a successful coach he is, so I expect a great response from them all. What are your hopes and expectations for the season ahead? I have very high hopes. Having Jos back is fantastic the fans all love him, as do I. So, Im expecting a lot. Weve had a very good pre-season; the players have all looked very sharp, with the youngsters appearing more and more mature. The sooner the players get a run of wins, the sooner the momentum will build and the harder we will be to stop.

One of our summer signings was a fellow goalkeeper, Mark Schwarzer. How do you rate him? Hes done well in the past. Hes a very experienced goalkeeper and, I think, hes a great addition to the squad. Hes a consistent player, too, which is always important when you play in goal. You currently hold the Chelsea record for clean sheets with 208, but Petr Cech is only 10 behind. Are you expecting him to beat that this season? I think so. Records are there to be broken just look at what happened with Frank lampard taking Bobby Tamblings last season. So, good luck to Cech. I think hes brilliant and I absolutely idiolise him. Hes

been one of the most consistent keepers in the league for many years now and hes a very good professional. Ive met him on numerous occasions I always speak to him when I can because I think the world of him. Hes done wonders for the club. Ill be only too pleased for him to take the record, for Chelseas sake as well as his own. I hope all records are broken, because it means the club is moving forward. And whats your prediction for todays game? Id expect us to win. Im sure Hull will give us a hard game and wont make it easy for us. However, I think and I hope that well be too strong for them. our lads will very much want to get off to a winning start.

TODAYS OPPOSITION HULL CITY

For the second time in just three seasons as a Barclays Premier League side, Hull City kick-off their campaign with a visit to Stamford Bridge. The Tigers finished second in last seasons Championship promotion race behind Cardiff City. Steve Bruces side earned their promotion thanks largely to their resilience. Although 13 clubs scored more goals than them in the 2012/13 Championship season, they had the fourth-tightest defence in the division, shipping just 52 goals in 46 league fixtures. Whats more, the Tigers dropped just 10 points from winning positions the best record in the second tier last term. They also fared well on the road, winning 11 of their matches a tally only bettered by Watford, the side Hull pipped to second spot. The former Wigan Athletic and Sunderland manager will be hoping to have added some firepower to his squad with his summer additions of Danny Graham, scorer of 12 Premier League goals for Swansea City in 2011/12, and Yannick Sagbo, who Bruce believes could emulate Aston Villa star Christian Benteke in taking the division by storm. Defensive reinforcements have arrived in the form of Curtis Davies, Maynor Figueroa and goalkeeper Allan McGregor. We know how difficult it is for clubs like ours to survive, said Bruce. But I look at my former club Wigan and how they did it for years; Swansea and West Brom are role models that show its achievable. We hope we can surprise a few people like we did last year in the Championship.

Capped 29 times by the Scottish national team, he spent last season in Turkey with Besiktas.

JAMES CHESTER
Position Defender Date of birth 23.01.89 Nationality English Apps 0 Goals 0 Chezzy, as he is known to his team-mates, has been tipped by Liam Rosenior to be a huge hit in the Premier League. Schooled in the Manchester United Academy, he failed to make the breakthrough at Old Trafford after debuting in a League Cup semi-final tie against Derby County. Recently signed a new contract with the Tigers.

ROBERT KOREN

Koren celebrated his third promotion from the Championship last season, captaining the Tigers to second place and leading by example by finishing as top scorer. The former Slovenia skipper, who netted at the 2010 World Cup, is a classy operator in the middle of the park and is just as comfortable playing a slide-rule pass as he is pulling the trigger himself. Formerly of West Bromwich Albion.

AHMED ELMOHAMADY

Just six years have passed since Boyd was playing non-league football. The midfielder, formerly of Peterborough United and capped by Scotland earlier this year, may not have had a chance to feature in the Premier League had his move to Nottingham Forest not broken down due to a failed eye test shortly before he joined the Tigers, initially on loan, in January. OPPOSITION FOCUS
Taking a look at some key figures and moments in the history of our opponents

Hull City was founded in 1904, playing friendly games at The Boulevard (the home of the Hull Rugby League Club), Anlaby Road Cricket Ground and Dairycoates. A year later they were elected to the Second Division of the Football League.

HOME SWEET HOME

CLUB LEGEND

Local lad Nick Barmby may have left his best years behind him when he joined Hull City in 2004 at the age of 30, but he helped the club move up from League One to the Premier League before going on to manage the Tigers in their hour of need. But for injuries, he would surely have earned more than 23 England caps in the early part of his career, during which he represented Spurs and Liverpool, among others.

Before moving to the 25,404-capacity KC Stadium in 2002, Hull spent most of their existence at Boothferry Park. Prior to that, the club spent time ground-sharing at the local rugby league stadium, The Boulevard, as well as a lengthy stint at Anlaby Road cricket ground, which was bombed during World War II.

MAGIC MOMENT

The Tigers defeated Bristol City, thanks to a goal from cult hero Dean Windass, in the 2008 Championship Play-off final to earn their spot in the top flight of English football for the first time. Hull marked their debut Premier League campaign with away wins at Arsenal and Spurs as they raced to third place after just nine games.

WELL, I NEVER

Eddie Gray, the Leeds United winger who was on the receiving end of a Ron Harris reducer in the 1970 FA Cup final replay, was Hull City manager when we beat the Tigers in February 1989.

Caution may be the order of the opening day for Bruce

It is a very tough call to guess Steve Bruces side for this one and I suspect he wouldnt have been totally sure of the team until yesterday at the earliest himself. During last seasons successful campaign, Bruce a fine centre-back himself, of course often played with three stoppers, so do not be surprised by a 3-5-2 again today. He has managed to get a topclass international goalkeeper in Allan McGregor over the summer. The Scot, signed from Besiktas, is a superb shot-stopper but, if he has a weakness, it is commanding his area from crosses; it will be useful, then, to have those three centre-backs on hand. Away to the Blues, caution might be the order of the day. Therefore, Ahmed Elmohamady, with his wealth of Premier League experience, might get the nod over Liam Rosenior, while winger Stephen Quinn was a doubt at the start of the week with a hamstring problem, meaning Robert Brady may feature. There may be a very Irish feel to the midfield if David Meyler gets the nod, as he has every right to expect following last seasons form. For all that Hull are powerful at the back and in midfield, there is an impressive creativity in the squad. Robert Koren is quite simply a class act who is always liable to make and score a goal, while Sone Aluko is also capable of creation at the highest level. Someone will need to provide for the front two, though one of those strikers may drop off into the middle when not in possession. George Boyd, who could fill that role or start from a deeper position, is a player who deserves his chance in the top flight at last not just for his work rate and his ability, but for his willingness to learn. However, who will score the goals is the big question. Boyd can; Danny Graham is a natural striker, even if he didnt get the numbers at Sunderland, while Yannick Sagbo just in from Evian comes highly recommended.

John Neal started his playing career with Hull City in 1949, scoring one goal for the Tigers in 60 appearances. However, he is better known to Chelsea fans as the manager who guided us back to the top flight as Second Division champions in 1984. The side he built at Stamford Bridge is one of the clubs most famous thanks to his signing of several future legends, including Kerry Dixon...

Kerry Dixon was a prolific striker for nearly a decade at the Bridge and is third on our all-time scorers list with 193 goals to his name. Between 1983 and 1990, he was our highest scorer in no less than six seasons. That included his 24 goals in 1984/85 to become the Division One top scorer, an honour he held jointly with Leicesters Gary Lineker...

Disappointing to lose after taking the lead

Under-21s coach: Dermot Drummy We played our rst game of the campaign last weekend at Aldershot Town where our Under-21 and Under-19 sides will play 25 games this season against Tottenham, which was a good experience in terms of the atmosphere and the playing conditions. We had a crowd of 2,900 there and a good pitch. Unfortunately, the most important aspect of the game was that we didnt perform in the end. It was one of the few games Ive been involved at Chelsea where the other side dictated the game for the most part and we were chasing the ball a lot. I didnt feel that we really got into them to disrupt their rhythm we allowed them to play. We took the lead when a great run from Jeremie Boga earned us a penalty, which was converted by Josh McEachran. However, we then got sloppy playing out, gave away some silly goals and ended up losing 4-2. By the time you are reading this, we will have played Southampton at St Marys in our second game. Im sure it will have been another tough game, but that is what we want and, hopefully, we were able to improve on the rst performance. Before the term began, we had a good pre-season, including a trip to the States, where the boys learned about the other side of being a footballer: the travel, the community work and meeting people. We took part in a community programme in Harlem and it has become clear that we have a massive global following now. On the pitch, we drew 1-1 with Philadelphia Union and beat New York Red Bulls 2-0 with a good squad of 20 players. After that, we came back to England and had good games against Frank Sinclairs Colwyn Bay and Kevin Wilsons Ilkeston Town, so it was nice to play against two managers with good links to Chelsea. It was a good pre-season in terms of results, but now we want to focus on positive performances in the league.

Austrian experience provides inspiration

Under-18s coach: Adi Viveash There was a slightly different feel to pre-season this year due to the amount of schoolboys we have had training with us. There is a big group of Under16s who we decided to take with us on our summer trip to Austria, something we have never done on such a large scale before. It has been very interesting for us all and, at the end of the season, we will be able to tell if the players have gained major benets from it. A number of the scholars who are in their second year have moved up to Dermots Under-21s group, while we have three in our group, along with a handful of rst years and several Under-16s players. So, it is quite a diverse group and a very young one, which is probably the youngest we have ever had. I expect it to be that way most weeks and we hope it will benet the development of those players, but they also have to be ready for it. They are fresh, they want to learn and they are a good group to coach all the staff have enjoyed pre-season. We stayed in Obertraun for six days, where we have been several times before, and that was good for us. We had the best weather we have had, great training facilities and we were able to take the players on various different adventures, including a trip up a mountain, which was awe-inspiring for everyone. In terms of the games we played in pre-season, we have faced varied opposition: Stevenage, Brighton, Derby and Bristol City as well as a game against a German youth team in Austria. We also played a minitournament at Tottenhams training ground against Spurs, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Arsenal. It was interesting for us because three of those teams are in our group at the start of this season, so it will be good to see what happens when we face them in the league. What we have seen from these pre-season games against them is that they all play a little differently and will all present a different challenge. That will be great from a development and learning point of view. Playing in that environment against top teams was very good for the players and we feel ready for the season now, which will have begun by the time you read these notes as our rst game was on Saturday morning at home to Sunderland. All in all, though, I have been pleased with the programme and now we are ready to get going.

LADIES

Beating Belles is a ringing endorsement

Manager: Emma Hayes Its been a busy summer for everyone involved with the Chelsea Ladies, but Im delighted to be able to start my rst set of programme notes with some positive news. With the FA Womens Super League taking a break for the European Championship, we delved into the transfer market to bring in Japanese star Yuki Ogimi, a World Cup winner with Japan who has also tasted glory in the Womens Champions League. What a coup it is for the club to bring in such a prestigious player a signing which shows we mean business. Yuki was outstanding in our rst game back, which was against Doncaster Rovers Belles, as were the whole team. We trained hard during July and the girls were ring. We dominated, moving the ball well and creating some really good chances. Eniola Aluko was one of three members of our squad who was away at the Euros and she was so disappointed with Englands early exit. However, for her to come back and put in a performance like that was testament to her character. Shes thrived this season with Chelsea and has been arguably our top performer. Her two goals were fantastic, especially the second. It was a great piece of skill on the left-hand side to beat her marker and she exchanged passes with Helen Ward before skipping past another defender and slotting the ball in the bottom corner. Helen had a good game, too, with two assists and a goal herself. She links play very well and doesnt always get the credit she deserves shes a tireless worker and one of our unsung heroes. Soa Jakobsson, like Eni, was gutted when she came back from the Euros after Sweden got so close to reaching the nal in their homeland, but her reaction has been superb. Shes another hard worker, doing so much defensive work for the team, and for her to nd the net made it a near perfect performance from our front three. I was also very happy with the clean sheet, which owed a lot to how well we kept the ball. Hannah Blundell coming in at right-back has worked for us because shes a gem of a player. Shes come up from our Centre of Excellence, too, and thats great for the guys who work so hard behind the scenes. I was able to give debuts to two other players from the centre, who I will discuss in my next set of notes, which will also cover our away trips to Lincoln City and Liverpool.

FOUNDATION

Pre-season tour boosts our legacy to the children of Asia

Throughout Chelseas Here To Play, Here To Stay tour of Asia, the Chelsea Foundation was hard at work building the clubs legacy in the region. In all three countries the first-team travelled to Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia the Foundations coaches visited local children and facilities, continuing the clubs commitment to improving grassroots football in Asia. The first such visit was to the Praya Prasert School in Bangkok, joining up with an existing project conducted there by our global charity partner Right To Play. The Foundation coaches delivered a series of fun training sessions for the pupils aimed at developing their ability and improving teamwork skills. In addition, the players themselves were on hand to assist the Foundation coaches when visiting Chelsea Soccer Schools during the tour, with no less than 13 squad members taking part in training sessions alongside local youngsters. In Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, the Soccer Schools are at Blue Pitch facilities created by Chelsea for previous tours, while a Blue Pitch will open in Jakarta in the near future. Here To Play, Here To Stay is something the club can do to leave a legacy behind and its a massive thing because the facility stays there for ever, said goalkeeper Petr Cech on a visit to the Blue Pitch in Malaysia. People start thinking about football in a different way; young players gain motivation from playing one-to-one against players they have on posters in their rooms. Its priceless and great to deliver. Some of our club partners were also involved at the Soccer Schools, with children invited to the Bangkok session through charities linked to global beer partner Singha, while official club sponsors adidas and Samsung hosted the events in Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta respectively, showing how everyone associated with Chelsea is committed to creating a lasting impact which remains in Asia long after the team has returned to London. This summers trip to Thailand also saw the Kits For Kids scheme come to fruition. Since it was launched in March, Chelsea have been encouraging fans and staff to donate old or unwanted football kits, resulting in the scheme collecting hundreds of items from generous supporters. With the help of Right To Play, the first batch of kits was handed out to young people at the Tham Hin refugee camp, which is home to approximately 7,000 people on the Thai-Burmese border.

THE COMEBACK
At the end of the 1982/83 season, Chelsea narrowly avoided relegation to the Third Division and possible nancial ruin, rising the following term to book a spot in the top tier. To mark the 30th anniversary of the 1983/84 campaign, each matchday programme this season will chart the key moments of our dramatic resurgence
One of the most iconic images in the history of Chelsea Football Club: Kerry Dixon, arms aloft in front of Blues supporters, considerably outnumbering their Arsenal counterparts, at Highburys Clock End. Fifteen months earlier, it would have been unthinkable. Fifteen months earlier, there may not have been a football club to support. However, fteen months earlier, Clive Walker scored a goal which is arguably the most important in Chelseas history, a strike which allowed King Kerry to turn Highbury blue for one afternoon. Its a goal that people have discussed with me a lot over the past decade. For a long period, maybe 15 years or more, no one ever mentioned it, said Walker, now a regular presence on Chelsea TV. At the time, I dont think I really recognised the signicance, but in recent times it has come to the fore. In stark contrast to the beautiful sunshine which lit up the Gunners iconic old stadium on a balmy August afternoon in 1984, a wet and windy Burnden Park played host to what was effectively a relegation play-off between Chelsea and Bolton Wanderers in the penultimate week of the 1982/83 season. Anything less than a victory would surely put paid to the clubs Second Division status with, perhaps, worse to follow. In a clich-ridden preview of the game, the Daily Mirror wrote of the clubs future hanging in the balance and of the trench warfare that awaited the moody Blues in the North West. However, right there in black-and-

As many of you will know, or will discover over the course of this season, John Neal was one of the major protagonists of Chelseas promotion-winning campaign in 1983/84. Having quietly established a reputation as a manager of some promise, working wonders on a shoestring budget with both Wrexham and Middlesbrough, the Durham-born tactician headed to west London in May 1981. By the time he departed, Neal had won the adulation of the Blues fanbase after turning around the clubs fortunes, but it could have been a different story altogether had chairman Ken Bates taken the advice of the supporters shortly before the crucial trip to Burnden Park to face Bolton Wanderers. Following a 1-1 home draw with Rotherham at Stamford Bridge, which left us third from bottom with just three games remaining, fans staged a sit-in after the game. They chanted for Eddie McCreadie who had controversially left the club six years earlier to return as manager and carved NEAL OUT on the pitch. I wish they would get off his back they are destroying a ne man, Bates told the Daily Mirror. Every old boy has been mentioned [for the job], from Harris, Webb, McCreadie, Greaves and Hutchinson. Im surprised Vic Woodley hasnt got a mention. Neals two years in the job up until then had been distinctly underwhelming, but the chairman was not for turning. Soon, he, and Chelsea Football Club, were about to reap the benets.

white, was a sentence no Chelsea supporter wanted to read: Rumours suggest the club will be nished if they go down. Having travelled up to the game on the Thursday, the players were joined three days later by a large Blues following of the 8,687 supporters at Burnden Park that day, the majority were supporting John Neals boys. As fortune would have it, the suspension of David Speedie, initially seen as a huge blow due to the Scots tenacity, proved to be a blessing in disguise. His absence led to Walker moving up front to partner Colin Lee and, with just 10 minutes remaining of a tense encounter, the breakthrough came from the makeshift centre-forward. It was one of those shots that, in that weather, was just about making good contact, he explains. Where the ball hits the net is immaterial just make good contact and itll y off your boot. But it wasnt about who scored the goal, it was all about Chelsea Football Club and stopping them being

Clive Walker and Colin Lee celebrate the crucial 1-0 win at Bolton that salvaged the 1982/83 season

relegated. I have to say, it was a real team performance and it was helped by a tremendous following turning up in the pouring rain, they were absolutely superb. The feeling was more than mutual, as we discovered from one supporter who had made the long trip up north. I was very grateful to Clive that day, said Sebastian Coe, a regular at Blues matches at that time. He put in

some outstanding performances in a Chelsea shirt, but none of them were more important than this one. Having seen the transformation that has occurred over the subsequent three decades, it was a very different kind of pressure that day. For example, being nervous about winning a penalty shoot-out in a Champions League nal is a high-class problem compared to going to Bolton needing a win to avoid dropping down to the third tier. That result, combined with a nervous 0-0 draw on the nal day against Middlesbrough We had a six-man defence, recalls Walker kept the Blues in the Second Division, albeit with our lowest-ever league placing as we nished 40th out of the 92 clubs in the Football League. However, it paved the way for a rebuilding process that would kick-off one of the most fondly remembered seasons in the clubs history; with a side packed full of players who are still revered in the stands to this today. Come along, come along, come along and sing this song; were the boys in Blue, Division Two we wont be here for long, sang the supporters. They werent wrong. Find out why over the course of this season, as we bring you the complete lowdown on the 1983/84 campaign and Chelseas return to the elite of English football.

N O I T S QUEI E TM TR
PE CECH
Interview | Dominic Bliss

Our No1 knows all about facing the Tigers on the opening day of the season and reveals how he is feeling as the 2013/14 campaign gets under way
We met Hull City at Stamford Bridge for our season opener in 2009/10 and went on to win the Double? Do you believe in good omens? Well, I remember we had a difcult game that day and we scored the winner only two minutes from time. They had a chance themselves with about four minutes left to go 2-1 up and they didnt take it. Then, Didier [Drogba] scored he wanted to chip it inside the far post, he hit it really well and it went in. We were forced to come from behind to win 2-1. Is it always tough on opening day? Its easier for something like that to happen at the start of the Premier League season, especially when you are playing at home and the opposition come here with nothing to lose. They were just promoted, so they were one of those teams with nothing to lose. We knew they would play for their lives and that it was not going to be easy. In the end, its up to you how you make things happen and we expect another difcult game today, but we want to start in a positive vein, with a victory. How do you expect Hull to approach todays game, having just been promoted back to the top ight under the management of Steve Bruce? I expect quite a tight match because, with the attacking threat we have, I dont think they will want to open the game for us. However, I also

60

think they will have a go if the score remains good for them and they will attack when they feel the chance to get some points. We faced a promoted team under Steve Bruce in 2007 as well, when we beat Birmingham 3-2, and that was an up and down game with a lot of goals. We didnt play particularly well, but for the opening game it is always important to win, no matter how you do it. Some people believe it is more difcult to play a newly promoted team at the beginning of the season. Do you buy into that? The rst game of the season is the rst game of the season, no matter who you play. Everybody is fresh and raring to go, and they come here without pressure, because there is no pressure on anyone to get a result. If you aim to get more than 40 points for the season and you get an extra point at Stamford Bridge, then you get an extra point on opening day. However, if you dont get it, nothing really changes. For Chelsea, it is a slightly different story as we are favourites every time we play at home, so it doesnt really matter who we play. How impressed have you been with our new signings? I think they have been doing really well and settling in well. So far, we

Mark Schwarzer joined the goalkeeping ranks during the summer

can already see the quality they have and the work ethic as well, so it has been good to see them tting into the team in pre-season. We have had time together in Asia and the United States and that gave us a chance to get to know each other as a group. There is a lot of life in this group and, on and off the eld, it has been great. It looks like Mark Schwarzer is settling in really well... I hope so! He is very professional and a very nice guy he came into the group with a positive mind and we seem to work well together. To see someone of his experience doing everything with the appetite he is showing is fantastic. What has it been like for you to work for Jos Mourinho again? Enjoyable. Its hard work, but I think that is the way to prepare for a season, the way to pay attention to detail and build the team to play the game you want. There are obviously some things

TO SEE SOMEONE OF MARKS EXPERIENCE DOING EVERYTHING WITH THE APPETITE HE IS SHOWING IS FANTASTIC
Didier Drogbas opening day winner against Hull in 2009

that have changed since we worked together last time, but you can see the intensity, quality of the work and preparation is at the same level. The excitement among the supporters is tangible at the outset of this season. Are the players feeling the same way? You are always raring to go because pre-season takes a long time, during which you work, work, work, travel, travel, travel. You win games but, if they are not in a full competition, it is different. We are waiting for the season to start for a new challenge, with plenty of opportunities to win things. The start of the season is always something you look forward to.

Promotion and emotion

Its in our DNA. Who they were makes us who we are today. Every programme, CSI examines rare photos and discovers the stories behind them
To adapt the Chinese proverb, each single step at the start of the season leads to a journeys end. Sometimes the denouement is a deflating one; occasionally it brings unrestrained delight. The latter was happily the case when Hull City made the trip to Stamford Bridge for the last game of the 1976/77 season. The baby boomer fan culture was reaching its peak, dovetailing with the snarl of punk rock. Even the Bay City Rollers, idols of pre-teen girls, had contributed: their silk scarf merchandise, tied round wrists, were adapted for use by the football fan who might otherwise consider himself too tasty a geezer for such apparel. At Chelsea, Shang-A-Lang was replaced on scarves by the name of Ray Butch Wilkins, the teams young skipper and midfield star. Red, white and green scarves mimicking the popular away kit colours were also popular, as the main photo shows.
62

This new grandstand replaced the first constructed at Stamford Bridge in 1905 by Archibald Leitch. Beautifully designed by Darbourne & Darke, it was built in 1973. A marvel of engineering, theres little doubt it was ahead of its time and it is the only part of the current stadium which survived the mass rebuilding of the 1990s. However, its eventual expense and functionality were more questionable and caused financial struggles which lasted for many years. Nevertheless, the East Stand remains as impressive today as it always did.

Words | Rick Glanvill (Official Historian)

The vast western terrace was replaced in 1964/65 to provide more comfort for supporters and a higher seat yield for the club. Its cambered rows and roof also heightened the atmosphere more than the old open terrace. The stand was three-quarters seating and one-quarter concrete slabs, affectionately known as the Benches. The West Stand existed until it was removed and replaced at the turn of the millennium. Despite its rickety appearance by its final days, it was a sad moment for many fans.

WEST STAND

Although the clubs future Chairman Ken Bates wanted to introduce electric fencing at the Bridge, first attempts to deter pitch encroachments belonged to the previous decade. The idea was to prevent rival clubs fans charging at each other, although, as the photo shows, fencing was powerless to prevent celebrations taking place on the pitch. Chelseas supporters had earned a reputation for hooliganism, but some incidents resulted simply from the overexuberance of a large and youthful new fanbase.

FENCING

Standing allowed large groups of friends to congregate under the partial roof and songs to be created. A walk up the Shed End steps was loaded with anticipation. The Shed Wall survives to this day, its top two metres showing where the terracing level once began. The South Stand was demolished in 1994, meaning, for some Chelsea supporters, a focal point inside the Bridge was lost. The mantle has partially passed on to the Matthew Harding Stand at the opposite end.
63

SHED END

Young captain Ray Wilkins was adored by the fans

Younger fans generally identify more heavily with footballers of their age group and, through financial adversity, Chelseas first team had to rely on a generation of youths produced by the clubs Juniors scheme. For the first time since the mid-1960s, the majority of the line-up were just a few steps away from the school playground rather than being seasoned internationals, of whom just a few remained. Manager Eddie McCreadie had even organised a wage reduction among his players to keep the wolf from Chelseas door though he himself was not on a contract with the club. Wilkins had become the clubs second youngestever captain and led with style and grace. These factors created unifying bonds that supercharged the young Blues surge back to the top flight in 1976/77. Come along and sing this song, chanted everoptimistic fans, Were the boys in blue in Division Two and we wont be here for long. Sadly, as you will see in our new feature on the

1983/84 season (page 51), it would have to be dusted down and reused a few years later. The team played with a brand of football that relied heavily on exuberance and camaraderie. This side had grown up together playing football and, if they were not all of the quality to take Division One by storm, they remain much-loved heroes to a generation of fans. A crowd of 43,718 came to celebrate promotion to the top flight after a two-year absence. Their keenness to publicly demonstrate faith in the McCreadie project almost scuppered the party. There were several premature pitch invasions, the first during a pause in play while referee Reg Robinson lectured two miscreants with the score already at 1-0 to Chelsea thanks to Steve Finniestons marksmanship. The centre-forward had added a second before midfielder Ian Britton nipped in, hit the third and ran for cover with his fellow players as fans swarmed onto the playing area. Older supporters booed and McCreadie appealed for

order over the stadiums public address system, but it was eight minutes before play resumed. Banners were unfurled on the upper tier of the East Stand reading: EDDIE McCREADIES BLUE N WHITE ARMY and DIV 2 KISS MY A*** DIV 1 WERE HERE AT LAST. The festive mood among the fans prevailed and the referee warned that one further invasion would prompt an abandonment. Luckily, a third goal for Finnieston completed the 4-0 scoreline close to the final whistle and the last wave of fans on the pitch became a party for most, although Finnieston later admitted he feared he was going to be suffocated by the well-wishing mob. Typically for the chaotic Chelsea of the day, the promotion euphoria was short-lived. A contract stand-off ended with McCreadie and the club parting company that summer. email: rick.glanvill@chelseafc.com

COMING UP THIS WEEK...

Today 6.30pm, 8.30pm and 10pm, Extra-time at the Bridge Following the Hull game, have your say on the days events and see all the post-match reaction.
The experts share their opinions on Chelsea TV

Chelsea TVs team of pundits gathered at the Bridge ahead of 2013/14 to share their views on the season ahead. The former Blues stars will be regular faces on a number of shows across the campaign and they cant wait for the action to begin. Pat Nevin We know how good Juan Mata is, I love watching him play, but I would say Eden Hazard is the one I am looking forward to seeing. I think he is one of the top 10 players on the planet. Graham Stuart First and foremost, Id like to see the Premier League title back here at Stamford Bridge. Obviously, the boys will want to do well in the Champions League, but lets focus on the bread and butter rst. Frank Sinclair I think there is really good competition for places throughout

the squad. Its good to have Michael Essien back, for example, adding more depth to the mideld. Clive Walker I think its important that we hit the ground running and start quickly. We need to get the points in the bag early because, whoever does that, particularly if its us, it will be difcult to catch them. Kerry Dixon They say the million dollar question is who plays in attack. However, for me, the million dollar question is who plays at the back. Tommy Langley I think it will be a massive rst day of the season. The crowd will be really up for it and, over the course of the season, I want to get our league title back from Manchester United.

Monday 6.30pm, Weekend Review Ben Andrews and Jason Cundy assess all the weekend action, with highlights and post-match reaction from todays xture and footage from our Academy games. Tuesday 6.30pm and 10pm, Blues News Catch the best bits from Jos Mourinhos press conference and the latest team news ahead of our clash with Villa. Wednesday 6.30pm, Matchnight Live Build-up followed by commentary on the Villa game. At 10pm, well have analysis and the post-match phone-in. Thursday 6.30pm, Blues News All the reaction from the Villa match. Friday 6.30pm, Friday Night Live Gigi Salmon is joined by special guests to reect on our rst two games and looking ahead to the trip to Old Trafford.

Its not just new signings being welcomed to Stamford Bridge for the first time this afternoon, as referee Jonathan Moss makes his debut appearance at our west London home. The 42-year-old, who has officiated in 36 Premier League games to date, took charge of three Blues fixtures last season Boxing Day at Norwich, the visit to Brentford in the FA Cup and the league trip to Southampton. Moss, born in Sunderland, was a handy footballer in his youth and got involved in refereeing when he was studying physical education for his A-Levels.

We urge you to respect your fellow supporters in this regard.

ALEC STEWART THE LAST WORD

Its been a summer of fun with the Ashes win and return of Jos
Former England cricket captain Alec Stewart hails the return of Jos Mourinho and offers some words of consolation for the visiting Australia cricket team... Theres huge anticipation at the start of any new season youve had all summer to reflect on events of the previous campaign and then the excitement of whats coming ahead. However, today is all the more special as we welcome Jos Mourinho back to Stamford Bridge. I think I speak for all Chelsea supporters when I say that Im delighted to see him return to the club. He achieved so much in his first spell here and I cant wait for him to get started again. I was lucky this game was switched to the Sunday as it will weather permitting allow me to attend today. Im overseeing things at Surrey County Cricket Club, which I really enjoy, and yesterday was Twenty20 finals day, with Surrey competing in it for the first time since 2006. The result of that was still up in the air when this publication went to print so, hopefully, there wasnt a day of rain and, by the time you are reading this, Surrey have another piece of silverware. Continuing on a cricket theme, lets give a warm welcome to the Australian cricket team, who are guests of the club today. They are a great bunch of lads and Im sure theyll enjoy themselves at Stamford Bridge. Im hoping that Chelsea can record a 4-0 win so Australia get used to that scoreline by the time the Ashes comes to an end at the Oval next weekend! I should probably add that during my career I was incredibly consistent in the Ashes I played in seven series and lost all of them! So, as you can imagine, Im enjoying Englands current dominance. Im not sure if any of the current Australia squad are fans of the Blues, although Warney [Shane Warne] claims to be. Hopefully, one or two of the others reveal themselves to have good taste when it comes to football! This summer, the club celebrated 10 years since Roman Abramovich became the owner of Chelsea Football Club and in that time he has taken us to another level. Chelsea has turned into a huge club throughout the world. We all hoped and dreamed that would be the case when he arrived, but now it has become a reality. Hes improved the club from top to bottom and I hope the next 10 years under him can be just as successful as the first. Enjoy the game and lets hope we start as we mean to go on.

Im hopIng chelsea wIn 4-0 so australIa get used to that score by the end of the serIes!
Englands cricketers have been brilliant during the Ashes
