In the Past (1976 - 1990)
Offshore & Engineering Division of HHI performed mainly offshore fabrication projects with its advanced yard facilities, permanent skillful labor and efficient construction management systems. Offshore facility projects included conventional fixed platforms, offshore installation and pipelaying. This period, where Offshore & Engineering Division of HHI learned about the execution of offshore projects, laid the foundation for HHI to grow as an EPCI contractor in the next era.

Semi-Submersible Unit
Semi-submersible drilling rigs have been traditionally built in a drydock. However, starting with the BP Harding PDQ project in 1993 and the Troll C FPU hull project in 1998, HHI has developed construction methods that will allow these hull-type structures to be built on land, and safely loaded onto a dock-side transport vessel. For the construction of a drilling semi-submersible, one additional construction method had to be developed, now known as the Super-Lift operation. The Super-Lift operation involves building the complete deck of the floating facility at ground elevation. Thereafter, the entire deck is lifted in the Super-Lift operation, and then the two supporting pontoon sections are skidded underneath from opposite sides. After the pontoons are properly positioned, the deck is lowered for mating and weld-out. HHI initially applied the Super-Lift deck mating operation to the 11,000-ton integrated deck of the Reading & Bates semi-submersible Deepwater Nautilus. Given the success of the fabrication program of the Deepwater Nautilus, Reading & Bates awarded HHI a contract for a second semi-submersible, the Deepwater Horizon. The Super-Lift for the Deepwater Horizon was even larger at 15,000 tons, and the unit was delivered in December 2000. HHI was awarded a contract from Shell for the Na Kika FPU in 2001 which was delivered in 2003. Similar to the Deepwater Nautilus and the Deepwater Horizon, the Na Kika FPU was constructed onshore and loaded onto a transport vessel for delivery to the Gulf of Mexico. For Na Kika, the four topside modules was lifted as an integral Super-Lift of 12,112-tons. The onshore construction method allowed the unit to be built at one location, as compared to the client having to award separate hull and topsides contracts, and/or potentially integrating the hull and topside at the offshore location. These construction methods have not only expanded the traditional market of the Offshore and Engineering Division of HHI, but it has also benefited our clients, since it allows us to consider fabrication programs that (1) are not tied to the tight schedule windows of shipbuilding drydock slots and/or (2) avoid an offshore topside and hull integration operation. We believe this is an example of creative construction methods of being able to produce a "win-win" situation for both HHI and its clients.

Substructure
HHI has fabricated more than 600,000 metric tons of offshore jackets, steel GBS and other subsea structures at the offshore yard since 1976. Based on its accumulated experience and capability, HHI has been well recognized as the most reliable contractor for providing a quality product, especially for super size substructures.
On-ground Shipbuilding
Offshore & Engineering Division of HHI came up with the new shipbuilding method to build commercial ships on ground instead of in conventional dry docks. HHI has successfully been building sixteen (16) 105,000-dwt crude oil tankers and seven (7) 82K LPG carriers on the ground without using dry docks, rocking the world shipbuilding circle. This is the first attempt in the world shipbuilding history and a paradigm shift in shipbuild method - breaking the conventional notion that ships are built and launched in a drydock. Furthermore, HHIs Offshore Yard boasts the worlds largest crane, a structure dubbed Goliath that is capable of lifting 1,500 tonnes. With this crane, HHI is able to achieve higher productivity, safe environment for workers and satisfy overseas clients who have a requirement for larger offshore units and On-ground Shipbuilding.

Offshore Installation
HHI has directly installed various types of offshore structures such as jackets, topside decks and modules, living quarters, etc., within the limit of lifting capacity of its own crane barges. Based on its high level of work skill, expertise and the successful execution of many offshore installation projects since 1976, HHI has gained a high reputation as a reliable installation contractor. With such accumulated experience and technology in various areas, HHI has performed the installation of heavy integrated decks, Gravity Base Structures (GBS), FSU, MOgPU, SPM, PLEM, etc., while working together with a number of specialized installation and marine subcontractors as part of an EPIC scope of work. HHI has completed the installation of a GBS weighing up to 14,900 tons with concreting and the installation of the IPD (Integrated Production Deck) weighing up to 7,000 tons on the top of the GBS at F2A Hanze Field, the North Sea, involving various marine and installation contractors. Furthermore, HHIs capacity extends to the installation of floating units in deep water such as FPSO, FSO, TLP, SPAR, etc.
MOgPU Installation - Conoco, West Natuna Project in Indonesia Platform Installation - BP, Lan Tay Project in Vietnam
HHI has completed the construction of two submersible barges that were built for the primary purpose of completing the loadout operations on large hull-type structures, such as ground-built jack-ups, FPUs, FSOs and FPSOs. Each barge is about 140-m long by 37-m wide and 15-m deep. When required, these two barges can be configured for ocean transport operations.

Subsea Pipeline
HHI provides a variety of construction services for the installation and commissioning of subsea pipeline projects with its own modern construction fleet, a wide range of equipment and reliable construction methods. HHI now owns and operates four pipelay barges including a semi-submersible pipelay barge Hyundai-423, a combined derrick and pipelay barge Hyundai-2500/Hyundai-60 and a shallow water pipelay barge Hyundai-289. These barges are equipped with enhanced automatic welding equipment and are able to lay the pipeline up to 66 inches in diameter in 300-m water depth. To date, HHI has laid more than 4,795 km of subsea pipeline worldwide.
