Documentary Proposal Form.

Student Name: Working Title: Synopsis of the documentary: Pearl Neilson Tackling Homophobia Is there enough being done about Bullying within schools and communities around Wiltshire. Trowbridge one of the many towns in Wilshire is known for being a little rough and also not a very centrally diverse accepting town, where as compared to perhaps more local cities such as Bristol and Bath. I want to find out from local Kids and students is enough being done? Has/hasnt it improved? Why? And the opinion of local groups and Wiltshire Council representatives. The documentary will Touch on all forms of discrimination in schools, but the main focus will be Homophobia and increase of the polish population within the UK as it is a rising epidemic.

Genre

How would you categorise your documentary (i.e. on current issues, celebrities, nature, health/science, human interest, experimental, etc.) The way in which I would categorise my documentary would be, Current issues and human interested because Homophobia and Cyber bullying and discrimination is a rising problem within schools and workplaces all around the world. Everyone knows about but is enough really being done to tackle it? My personal belief about the subject is that: I personally believe that although there are contestant attempts from organisations such as stone wall , HRC , Zee Tee Campaign , Schools out and loads more , kids still dont 100% feel that they are being heard of helped enough when it comes to bullying or discrimination, that schools in particular although say they do all they can dont do anything. My film will show the following point of view: That even in 2013 that it is a continuous struggle being a youth, and getting the appropriate help that you require. Why arent schools and other areas within our town being as supportive as they should be in protecting the community?

Your beliefs and bias on the topic:

The main conflict is between the following points of view (if there is one): The main conflict will be between the two opinions of Students and Teens within the Local area, and School/teachers/Local Representatives opinions on how exactly bullying and discrimination is being handled within Trowbridge. Ultimately I want the audience to feel and understand: I want the audience to emphasize with the youths being shown within this documentary, I want them to see the struggles they go through and notice how much they have to tackle to be heard and to get help.

What background information does the audience need to understand the topic of your film? They need to be aware of the fact that bullying is a huge problem still in society today. They need to be aware how much in particular homophobia is used in places of work and schools, and to be aware that in fact yes things are being done to get rid of it but this documentary will show them who exactly the ones are doing the work. My personal belief about the subject is that: Some people consider bullying to be a right of passage when in fact its not. Bullying is a serious problem; children die all the time from contestant torment. I want to highlight this in my documentary and emphasise to my audiences. Something needs to be done!

Characters

Who are the characters in our documentary and what is their role or purpose? Is there a particular point of view they are meant to get across? I plan to have a variety of Characters in this Documentary Student Local Council Members Zee Tee Members Possible Ofsted Member Local Teachers How do you intend to represent these characters? I want to show the Youths and Zee Tee members as powerful yet vulnerable at times, to empathise my point. They are trying to help and fight this epidemic and help others however they need the muscle power behind them but arent getting it. Teachers I want highlight both their views because some may believe that enough is being done where as some may view the situation as not enough is being done and its beyond their power. Will there be any conflict between characters with opposing points of view? If so, how will you show this in your film? The conflict will be their different views on how much exactly is being done. I will show the amount of work and conferences and assemblys kids are doing to help other youths.

Bias of Audience

The audience of your documentary might have preconceptions or fixed beliefs about your topic that you would like to change. What might these be? Most audience members such as parents dont always understand how much discrimination their children receive or how easy it is to get bullied today [ online , face 2 face ect ] or perhaps believe schools are doing all they can to help I want to shed light on the fact this isnt always true . What evidence will you show to get the audience to see things differently? I will interview a variety of age ranges and experience from different youths and perhaps their parents also will be interview to see their views on the situation and if they knew about the bullying and how they tackled that problem.

Codes & Conventions

What codes and conventions of documentary filmmaking will you include and why? The type of Doc is an expository! Naturalistic Lighting and sound To show nothing is staged and is completely real. Nothing Will be scripted I want 100 Honest answers- to ensure authenticity Interviews with experts or Council officials and school teachers- They are used to authenticate the views in this Documentary Numbers and statistics To hit home certain important facts In what ways will your documentary be realistic or unrealistic? Certain parts may contain aspects of verisimilitude, whereas others may possess aspects of actuality.

Production Style

Identify any key imagery or metaphors you would like to include: Between voice overs I Will cut away to posters about bullying information and any other relating information that are in support of students wellbeing around the school and classroom or buildings. Perhaps students on computers viewing websites that are available to youths. Do you intend to use a particular shooting, editing or narrative style to help get your message across? I plan on doing a quick cutting style of editing, but to emphasis some deep moments or meaning it will be done gently to urge people to understand the sensitivity of the topic. How do you intend to handle the passage of time in the film? If perhaps its the next day I will do a time lapse of the sky or perhaps a soft fading between two shots. Or text on the screen to notify the audience a certain amount of time has passed.

Structure & Resolution

To dramatise human issues a documentary might follow a narrative structure starting with the introduction of characters, the building of tension and suspense between opposing forces, a confrontation, a climax and then a resolution. Can this be applied to the structure of your film and if so, how?

Write a brief paragraph about how you intend to end your film. This is important because it will determine what you leave the audience thinking about and remembering. You dont want to finish on a dead note or in a dull way. You might think back to your beginning and make a full circle by coming back to that point somehow.

I want the end result being that the audience will realise that amount that is actually being done to tackle bullying and despite the effort , I want them to realise the sheer amount of what is still needing to be done and why hasnt it happened yet ! How can we as a community work towards helping this academic !

Scheduling

Do you have a target audience and how can they be defined? Be as specific as you can. My target Audience is Parents, Teens aged 12- 19, Teachers + Education officials, hence why I am including these people within the documentary also.

What suggestions do you have for the scheduling of your documentary? Is there any particular time in the year, day of the week or time of day/night when it should be shown? Time of day I plan on doing this documentary is during school times 9-3PM for when interview students and teachers and Mid-day afternoon when Officials are available to be interviewed. In between the two if need be during weekends also for the comfort of teens if they wish to not be filmed on school grounds. Look into the scheduling of documentaries on ITV. When would an appropriate time be for the showing of your documentary on ITV? (You must attach search to support this) 8-10pm This is the time after ITV news is on and soaps and documentarys come on. It appears from the schedule this is time of the evening for ITV viewers are shown Docs .

Compliance

What actions will you take to address the following issues in your documentary? Ensuring the accuracy of the information presented: I will talk to people who have personally experienced certain situations and provide examples to verify the authenticity of what happened. When interviewing teachers about events I will in contrast interview the student who was relevant the subject just to make you that what has been said is in fact accurate.

Ensuring balance in any arguments presented: Ask Students in particular to get their onions across without too much slander of institution such as their current or previous schools or certain officials. Ask them to be collected and professional about the situation.

Respecting the privacy of contributors: If there are any students or teachers who wish to not be shown I will comply and only have a voice over, or not include their names during the interview. Perhaps if they wish to not be shown all together they will be resented in a reenactment and someone else will voice over the experience in their words.
