Title: Exploring the P Sound Time Allotted: 25-35 minutes Grade Level: Kindergarten Ingrid Wolfe Description of Topic:

Students will learn about the sound the letter P makes, and become familiar with words that start with P, and be able to correctly write it. Essential Question: What sound does the P make? What common words that I use start with the letter P? How is it written? Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.K.3a Demonstrate basic knowledge of one-to-one letter-sound correspondences by producing the primary sound or many of the most frequent sounds for each consonant. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.K.1a Print many upper- and lowercase letters. Learning Objectives Students will know the sound a P makes, and various words that start with P. Students will be able to write the letter P. Assessments Oral assessment during and after reading the book of the teacher asking what sound a P makes, and words that begin with P. The instructor will ask students to come up to the board to review how to write the letter P.

Materials: My p Sound Box book, pencils, crayons, white board, dry erase markers. Prior Knowledge: Students will have been taught how to write the letter P the day before. Some students may know what sound a P makes and know of a few words that begin with P. Hook: (5 minutes) This lesson will begin with a review of how to write the letter P on the carpet in front of the white board. The instructor will say to the students, Does anyone know what letter we learned yesterday? Ms. Wolfe forgets how to write the letter P, can any of her friends volunteer to come up to the board and show her how to make an upper case P? How did you make this? Can another volunteer show Ms. Wolfe how to make a lowercase P? How did you make this? Procedure: (15-25 minutes) 1. After the teacher reviews writing the letter P she will instruct the students to say the part of the alphabet song for P, P says pa, pa pa pumpkin. Then she will ask, Now what

sound does the P make? Pa! Good, now does dog start with P? No dog does not start with p! How about princess? Yes princess starts with p. What about crayon. Does crayon start with p? No, it doesnt start with P. What about pumpkin? Does pumpkin start with P? Yes pumpkin does start with the letter p and it makes the what sound? Good the pa sound. Then the teacher will sit in a chair next to the white board, and say to the students, today we are going to read a book about the letter P. It is called My p Sound Box. Can anyone tell me what this part of a book is? (circle the title). Can anyone tell me what this part is? (touch the cover page and then proceed to the back page. What is the illustrator? After the teacher is done with her questions on the parts of the book, she will then proceed to read the book to the students pausing at each page to show the children the pictures and answer any questions. At the end of the story the teacher will ask the students to tell her some of the things little p put in her box that begin with the letter p. As the students raise their hands and tell the teacher some words she will write them up on the board so the students can see how they are spelled, and that they begin with the letter P. After going over the words little p put in her box in the book, the teacher will one more time go over the sound p makes, P says pa, pa pa pumpkin! Then the teacher will introduce the activity the students will be doing involving the letter p. The will make a pumpkin out of a paper plate, by flipping it over and coloring the back orange, and putting eyes, nose, and a mouth on it. On the back side, they will write their name and write P is for pumpkin. The teacher will have an example made for the students to look at while they are creating their own. The teacher will send the students back to their desks to begin coloring their plates, and while they are working she will walk around the room to monitor their progress and help if needed. She will also be checking that they write P is for pumpkin correctly on the back side of their plate.

The teacher will go around to each student while they are coloring in their pumpkin plate and assist them one on one if needed, primarily with writing P is for pumpkin. 2. The teacher will use positive reinforcement by complimenting them on their coloring and their writing of the letter P. 3. The instructor will tell the students that if they finish drawing their picture of a teacher they can flip over their paper and free draw on the back. 4. The instructor will be constantly be repeating p says pa, pa pa pumpkin throughout her lesson on the rug and while the students are coloring so all the students become familiar with the sound the letter makes 5. The teacher will allow students to verbally tell her how to make the letter P in her hook activity if they wish to not come up in front of the class and write it on the white board. 6. The teacher will also have the sentence P is for pumpkin that they are supposed to write on the back side of their pumpkin plate up on the board so all students can see it. This way if they are having trouble writing it and dont want to ask the teacher, they can look at how it is written on the board. Classroom Management: 1. The instructor will say, 1, 2, 3, eyes on me to get the attention of the children, and they will respond with 1, 2, eyes on you. This will focus their attention on the teacher and stop them from continuing their work. 2. When asking for volunteers, the teacher will remind the students that she will only pick students who are raising their hands quietly, and sitting correctly. 3. If the class starts to get loud at any time during the lesson, the instructor will say, Everyone catch a bubble. This makes the children puff air into their mouths and close them so they cant speak or talk to each other anymore. 4. The teacher will be constantly making sure everyone is participating and that their eyes are front on her during the lesson on the carpet. Transitions: In order to transition from writing the letter P in the hook activity to reading the book, the teacher will discuss the sound the P makes and ask students to identify if some words start with the letter p. Then she will begin to read the book all about words that start with the P sound. To transition from talking about the book to the pumpkin activity, the teacher will talk about how pumpkin starts with p, and pumpkins are especially used for the fall season. She will

discuss the coloring activity, and then ask students row by row to transition from their seats on the carpet to their seats at their desks. Closure: (1 minute) After all the students are done coloring their pumpkins and writing their sentence on the back side of the pumpkin, the teacher will say 1, 2, 3, eyes on me to get the students attention, and ask a few students to stand up and show their pumpkin to the class. After this she will ask the class one more time, What sound does a P make? P says pa, pa pa pumpkin!
