DENSO Water Review

October 2009

Many organisations have had their focus on reducing high energy and waste
disposal costs. However, through managing water efficiently there are good
opportunities for all businesses to make improvements and see the results on
their bottom line.
Following the success of the Lyreco
Water Audit held in April 2009, DENSO
hosted a Water Review on 28th October.
Working with Envirowise, we arranged
for a water specialist to complete a
review of DENSO’s water use, looking at
previous bills and the water meters on site.
The aim of this process was to highlight areas of good practice and
identify financial savings and improvement opportunities.

Firstly a bit about DENSO….

• Manufacturer of automotive air conditioning parts


• Telford site covers 210,000 m²
• Currently has 800 employees on site
• Water usage for 2008 was 85,800 m³
• Usage charge of £92,000 a year
• Discharge cost of £72,000 a year

The workshop opened with a presentation from Margo Dobson from


Envirowise about water management and the importance of understanding your water bills. This informed
delegates how to calculate typical water usage for their site and areas for potential savings.
Manel Roura from DENSO then gave an overview of DENSO and the areas of water use showing a detailed
plan of the site and its meters. Delegates then participated in a tour of the premises followed by a debrief of
the findings to close the event.
Manel Roura, Environment Officer at DENSO said ‘DENSO have not particularly focussed on water
previously as our attention had been on the high costs of energy and waste disposal. This review has been
invaluable, as it has highlighted areas for improvement and financial and environmental savings for the
company.’

The review highlighted the potential of £40,000 in financial


savings for DENSO through more efficient water management
which includes
• Potential for reuse of water
• Overuse of water at weekends - ensuring correct usage at
relevant production times
