BEN: Today Grace and I are here to present the Washington Area Theatre
Community Honors for Best Play. Our last nominee is Seminar by Theresa
Rebeck. Rebeck has written many other plays, including her new play Fools,
which premiered earlier this year. Rebeck won a Pulitzer in 2003 for her play
Ominum Gatherum. As its name suggests, Seminar tells the story of four young
fiction writers floundering in their New York City creative writing seminar under
the added pressure of harsh competition and Leonard, their outlandishly crude
and ruthless teacher. They learn about the world of writing, and test what they
are personally willing to do in order to get ahead.
GRACE: Set in the young student Kates Upper West Side apartment, each of
the classes are connected with interactions and, more often than not, conflicts
between uptight Kate, her friend from high school and roommate Martin, Izzy the
lusty nymphomaniac and Douglas, the pretentious man with a last name famous
in the writing community. Each session the class discusses the work of one
student, with Leonards unorthodox, blatant rudeness driving Kate and Douglas
to reconsider how they want to make it to the top. Meanwhile, Kate expresses
her disapproval of Izzys method to gain validation from Leonard: sex.
BEN: The actors do a wonderful job of portraying their characters and all of their
quirks and flaws. Alexander Strain, who plays Martin, manages to be both likable
and horrible to his peers at the same time, and creates very believable
connections with other actors. Laura C. Harris explores the boundaries of acting
through her uncomfortably realistic depiction of sensual acts as Izzy. Katy
DeBuys stands out with her over-the-top facial expressions and body language
as Kate. Tom Story does a wonderful job of portraying the pretentious Douglas,
creating a character the audience slowly grows attached to while still maintaining
an air of charming superiority.
GRACE: And the WATCH goes to.. Seminar by Theresa Rebeck!!
Theresa Rebeck: Ohmygosh wow I dont even know what to say (etc)there have
been so many incredible people working to make Seminar the show that it is.
First of course Jerry Whiddon for being such an amazing director and bringing
