Surface Development

The document discusses surface development, which is the process of laying out the complete surface of an object in a plane. It provides examples of developing the surfaces of truncated pyramids and cones, with step-by-step diagrams showing how to flatten out the 3D shapes. The purpose of surface development is to facilitate the manufacture of engineered products by allowing flat stock materials to be cut according to a 2D template.

Surface Development

 The complete surface of an object laid out in

a plane is called development of the surface.

 Surface
developments are required for the
manufacture of many engineering products.
Surface Development of a
Truncated Pyramid
 A square pyramid
stands vertically on its
base on horizontal
plane with one edge on
the base to vertical
plane. Its front elevation
is cut by a plane at an
angle of 45° with hp.
Develop the surface of
the truncated pyramid.

Surface Development of a
Truncated Cone
 A right cone vertically
stands on its base on
hp. Its front elevation is
cut by a plane of 45°
with hp. Develop the
curved surface of the
truncated cone.
