Lab Report 1

Three meristems - the apical, intercalary, and lateral meristems - can be observed in Figure 1. Apical meristems, located at the tips of stems and roots, allow for primary growth and the development of primary tissues as they are necessary for growth and reproduction. Phloem parenchyma cells form the packing tissue between other cell types in plants and store compounds such as starch. Cellulose in cell walls provides rigid structure to vascular plants and allowed them to maximize light absorption through their orientation.

LABORATORY REPORT 1
Guide Questions:
1. How many meristems can be observed in Figure 1? Why do plants need
apical meristems?
2. What structure can be found on the outer surface of the organ? Give its
function.
3. What tissue consists of cells containing chlorophyll, an extremely
important biomolecule for photosynthesis?
4. What complex structure provides rigid walls of vascular plants?
Answers:
1. Three meristems can be observed in Figure 1. The apical, intercalary, and
lateral meristems. Primary growth is the growth in length that gives rise to primary
(herbaceous) tissues called the primary plant body. One of this type is apical meristem, the growing
points located at the tips of stems and roots. The plant need this for growth and reproduction.
2. NO !"#$%%%
&. Phloem Parenchyma is living and has thin cell walls. These cells form the
packing tissue between all the other types of cells. The phloem parenchyma
stores compounds such as starch.
4. Plants have rigid cell walls because they have cellulose, the stuff wood is
made of, in the cell walls. These cell walls are around the outside of the plant
cell membrane. A rigid cell wall would have allowed the plants to orient
themselves in order to maximize the amount of light their getting.
