Chapter 9

This chapter discusses English syntax and how insights from syntax can apply to teaching reading and a second language. It introduces four views of grammar: as a description of syntactic structure, as prescriptions for correct use, as rhetorically effective use of structures, and as the functional command of syntax. The chapter also covers basic syntactic concepts like compound and complex sentences, grammatical acceptability, and lexico-syntax. It concludes by explaining theories about teaching related to syntax and second language acquisition.

Chapter 9

English Syntax
In this chapter, students are going to learn some basic aspects of the English Syntax. And also
this chapter will help students to answer the following question: how do insights from syntax
apply to teaching reading and teaching a second language.
In this chapter, 4 views of grammar are developed:
- Grammar as a Description of Syntactic Structure. According to linguistics, grammar
and syntax are synonyms.
- Grammar as Prescriptions for correct use. Teachers believed that if students learned
about grammar, they could apply this knowledge to both writing and speaking.
- Grammar as Rhetorically Effective use of Syntactic Structures: More teachers now
teach grammar in the context of student writing, particularly during the editing stage.
- Grammar as the Functional Command of Syntax: Chomsky has argued that humans
are born with an innate capacity for language.
Introduction to a theory of syntax: in this chapter is presented some basic concepts and
methods that linguists use to describe syntactic structure of English sentences.
Grammatical acceptability: in this part of the chapter, the author explains that the syntactic
structure of English is determined by native English speakers to be accepted.
Compound sentences: compound sentences consist of two or more simple sentences joined
by a coordinate conjunction.
Complex sentences: complex sentences consist of a main clause and one or more subordinate
clauses.
Lexico-Syntax: part of knowing a word is knowing how the word functions in a sentence.
The chapter finishes by explaining theories about teaching related with syntax and second
language acquisition.
