GUIDED WAVES BETWEEN PARALLEL PLANES

What is wave? Give some typical examples.

A wave can be defined as a means of transporting energy from source to destination .In general,
the wave is a function of space as well as time .The typical examples of EM waves are radio
waves ,TV signals ,radar beams and light rays.
What is meant by TEM wave?
When the components of electric and magnetic fields in the wave, both are transverse to the
direction of propagation of wave, then such a wave is called TEM wave i.e. transverse
electromagnetic wave.
Define guided wavelength.
The wavelength is defined as the distance travelled for the phase shift through 2 radius .Thus
wavelength is given by,
2
g

This is the wavelength in the direction of propagation of a guide. Hence this wavelength is also
called guide wavelength and is denoted by
g

What are the characteristics of principal wave?
a) The fields are entirely transverse
b) Along the direction normal to the direction of propagation ,the amplitude of field components
are constant.
c) The velocity of propagation is given by v=
0 0
1
c

.Thus the velocity of TEM wave is
independent of frequency ,unlike TE and TM waves.
d) The cut-off frequency of the wave is zero, indicating all the frequencies down to zero can
propagate along the guide.
e) The ratio of amplitude of E to H between the parallel planes is defined as the intrinsic
conductor
What is the cut-off frequency of TEM wave?
The cut-off frequency of TEM waves between two parallel conducting planes is zero. The cut-off
frequency can be defined as the frequency at which the propagation constant changes from being
real to imaginary. In other words, it is the frequency below which the signal suffers only
attenuation, while above it ,wave is just starting to propagate.
Write the expression for the wave impedance of TE, TM and TEM waves between parallel
planes.
