Course Description

The first semester of this course features a survey of American literature, covering
the Colonial Period, the Revolutionary Period, early National authors, and New
England writers. Critical thinking skills are developed and literary terms and elements
are reviewed and used for analysis of the works. Fall semester also emphasizes
increased technical and creative writing skills beyond those learned in English 10A/B.
Written paragraphs and essays required include descriptive, explanatory, narrative,
and persuasive. Taking standardized tests, understanding analogies, and preparing
for the PSAT, ASVAB, and other vocational tests will be emphasized. Vocabulary
development continues at this level. Additional requirements include a written report
that might require minimal research, book reports, and one speech per quarter, such
as participation in interviews, panel discussions, or debates.
Spring semester continues the literature survey covering the Civil War authors;
American realism; Twentieth Century fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Noted authors
and appropriate terms are also studied. An American novel is to be read outside the
classroom with some variation of a book report for evaluation. Writing exercises
include letters, college information requests, and compositions of a critical or
analytical nature. The basic steps to research are introduced. A research or survey
can be conducted with emphasis on the writing process and creativity as part of or in
conjunction with a service learning activity.
