Alternatives to Book Reports
1. Write a letter to the main character and the characters reply.
2. Write a different ending for the book. 3. Pretend you are a talk show host and interview the main character. 4. Create a travel brochure for the story. 5. Create a book jacket, including illustrations, an enticing synopsis, author bio, and favorable reviews. 6. Summarize the book into a comic or story aimed for your classmates. 7. Write a news article about an important event from the book. 8. Write a letter to a close friend recommending the book. 9. Explain why you think this book will or will not be read 100 years from now. Support your opinion by stating specific events in the story. 10. Write a ballad or song about the characters and events in your story. Set the words to the music of a popular song and sing it to the class. 11. Design a poster or new book cover depicting the climax of the story. 12. Draw a classroom mural depicting a major scene from the book and include a written explanation to be turned in to the teacher. 13. Be a TV or radio reporter, and give a report of a scene from a book as if it is happening live. 14. Write a three sentence summary of each chapter and illustrate the sentence. 15. Create an Accordion Fold Book summarizing the story. 16. Perform a skit that summarizes the book. 17. Imagine that you are the author of the book you have just read. Suddenly the book becomes a best seller. Write a letter to a movie producer trying to get that person interested in making your book into a movie. Explain why the story, characters, conflicts, etc., would make a good film. Suggest a filming location and the actors to play the variousroles. YOU MAY ONLY USE BOOKS WHICH HAVE NOT ALREADY BEEN MADE INTO MOVIES. 18. Construct puppets and present a show of one or more interesting parts of the book. 19. Make a time line of all the events in the book. 20. Write a diary that one of the story's main characters might have kept before, during, or after the book's events. Remember that the character's thoughts and feelings are very important in a diary. 21. Dress as one of the characters and act out a characterization.
Requirements for book report: Protagonist the central character Antagonist whatever opposing force the protagonist struggles with, such as another character, environment, or something within the protagonist Setting When and where the story mainly takes place. Conflict What was the opposition between forces in a story (usually between the protagonist and antagonist) Resolution How was the problem or issue resolved? Theme The moral message that you could glean from the overall story.
