Your essay response is your chance to clearly communicate your deep
understanding of the themes, plot, characters and message of the novel.
You must analyse (think about in depth, pull apart and examine)
the novel in order to have something to write!
(Just watching the film will give you about 30% understanding of the depths of the novel & will not stretch your language and thinking skills.)

1. In To Kill a Mockingbird, the mockingbird is a symbol for the good, innocent people who are
destroyed by evil. Critically analyse Harper Lee’s portrayal of Boo Radley and Tom Robinson as the
‘mockingbirds’ of the novel.

2. “I’m simply defending a Negro—his name’s Tom Robinson” (p.75). With these words Atticus
informs Scout of his life-altering task of standing up to the prejudice and racism that pervades the
sleepy southern town that was Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930’s. Discuss the effects of racism on
Maycomb citizens. (Consider characters such as Tom and Helen Robinson, Calpurnia, Scout, Jem,
Dill, Mayella Ewell, or Dolphus Raymond.)

3. Boo Radley, the alleged haunt of Maycomb, became the instrument of justice for a town too
cowardly to face the truth. Explain the significance of Boo’s role in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird.

4. Atticus says to Jem that he wants his son “to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea
that courage is a man with a gun in his hand” (p.121). Discuss the way courage is defined by this
novel through different characters and plot strands.

5. While at the trial, Scout states “it came to me that Mayella Ewell must have been the loneliest
person in the world” (p.209). Is Mayella Ewell a character worthy of compassion? Evaluate her
role in the plot and message of the novel.

Introduction: Attention-getter, Context (novel), Thesis Statement, outline supporting points (arguments),
reinforce thesis
3 Body Paragraphs: Each body paragraph developed with P.E.E.L. structure
 6-8 sentences per paragraph, beginning with a clear TOPIC statement (main point).
 At least two quotes (full sentences, or preferably many phrases embedded) per paragraph, page#
 Concluding sentence sums up point and LINKS everything back to support thesis/restate Thesis
Concluding paragraph: 5 -7 sentences
 Reinforce thesis, restate key points/arguments
 Connect thesis to Universal Themes, or relate it to your own reality of the world today.
Leave the reader thinking!
