Sensors
Definition:
A sensor is a device which detects or measures a physical property and records, indicates, or otherwise responds to it.
A sensor measures the amount of something.
KEY POINT: Sensors are used to provide input for measurement applications.
Task 1
Each of the pictures below shows a different type of sensor. Work out what type of sensor each one is and what system its part of.

2.
3.
4.
5.
Task 2
Analogue data is a measurement of a physical property such as temperature or movement or sound. An analogue
data change in smooth increments in doesnt just from on measurement to another.
Digital data is simply 0s and 1s. computers only understand digital data.
Therefore an analogue to digital converter is used because sensors produce analogue data whereas computers only
process digital data. And those two arent compatible so the conversion is needed so it can work.
Task 3
A heating system uses a sensor to decide when the radiators should be turned on and off.
The controls are set to maintain a room temperature of 22 Degrees C
When the system turns on, the water must flow round and be constantly warmed.

2. What output devices would be needed in this system? Explain their use
A heater device would be needed so that it can keep on heating the water
3. Fill in the PROCESSES (rules) below that this system would need to follow
Example: If the speed is greater than 70 then turn the motor OFF.
Sensors Exam
questions
temperature, sunlight,
motion detectors
To answer this question, you will need to think about the rules you created in the final lesson task
+---
It could have a motion input and have a buzzer output the process would be if anything moves then the buzzer
goes off
Also if it had a sound input and a light output so if sound is greater than 10 decibels then the light turns on.
Finally it could have a heat input and a siren output so if the temperature is higher than 40cdegrees then a siren goes
off.
