FilletWelds
Thefilletweld (pronounced"FILLit,"not"filLAY")isusedtomakelapjoints,
cornerjoints,andTjoints.Asitssymbolsuggests,thefilletweldisroughly
triangularincrosssection,althoughitsshapeisnotalwaysarighttriangleoran
isoscelestriangle.Weldmetalisdepositedinacornerformedbythefitupofthetwo
membersandpenetratesandfuseswiththebasemetaltoformthejoint.(Note:for
thesakeofgraphicalclarity,thedrawingsbelowdonotshowthepenetrationofthe
weldmetal.Recognize,however,thatthedegreeofpenetrationisimportantin
determiningthequalityoftheweld.)
Theperpendicularlegofthetriangleisalwaysdrawnontheleftsideofthesymbol,
regardlessoftheorientationofthewelditself.Thelegsizeiswrittentotheleftofthe
weldsymbol.Ifthetwolegsoftheweldaretobethesamesize,onlyonedimension
isgiveniftheweldistohaveunequallegs(muchlesscommonthantheequal
leggedweld),bothdimensionsaregivenandthereisanindicationonthedrawingas
towhichlegislonger.

Ifnolengthisgiven,thentheweldistobeplacedbetweenspecifieddimensionlines
(ifgiven)orbetweenthosepointswhereanabruptchangeinthewelddirection
wouldoccur(likeattheendoftheplatesintheexampleabove).
Forintermittentwelds,thelengthofeachportionoftheweldandthespacingofthe
weldsareseparatedbyadash(lengthfirst,spacingsecond)andplacedtotherightof
thefilletweldsymbol.
Noticethatthespacing,orpitch,isnottheclearspacebetweenthewelds,butthe
centertocenter(orendtoend)distance.
