The work of the Human Resources department
Recruitment and selection are the most familiar roles of Human Resources department.
Recruitment and selection:

Training programmes:

Involves attracting and selecting


the best candidates for vacancies
that arise.

Involves assessing and fulfilling the


training needs employees. This
should be linked to the future plans
of the business.

Wages and salaries:


These must attract and retain the
right people and be sufficiently
high to motivate employees

Industrial relations:
There must be effective communication
between representatives of the
management and of the workforce. This
may be resolve grievances and disputes
but also to put forward ideas and
suggestions for improvements.

Health and safety:


The business needs to make sure
that it complies with all the laws
on health and safety.
Redundancy (retrenchment) and
dismissal:
This involves shedding employees either
because the business changes in some
way or because the employee is not
satisfactory. The business must be sure to
comply with all the laws on redundancy,
dismissal and disciplinary matters.

Recruitment and selection


When an employee leaves a job, when a new business is starting up or when a business is
successful and wants to expand, the process of recruitment and selection starts. The business
will first of all have to decide if the employee leaving a job needs to be replaced. The
recruitment process also gives the business an opportunity to reassess the nature of peoples
jobs and consider future requirements.
