,, Understanding Work Energy - Power and Efficiency

1) Work is defined as the product of an applied force and the displacement of an object in the direction of the applied force. 2) The girl doing work by pushing a trolley of books, but the boy did not do any work by pushing on a wall that did not move. 3) Work can be calculated using the formula W=F×s, where F is the applied force and s is the displacement. The SI unit for work is the joule (J).

WORK

The boy pushing the
wall

The girl pushing the

trolley
- The girl does work when she pushed the
trolley of books
- The boys does not do any work, as the wall

did not move though he applied a force on

it
What does work mean?

l When the applied force
on an object and the
direction of movement
of the object is not
the same, then the work F
done can be calculated
by the formula object
θ

W = F cos θ x s
l Where θ is the angle
between the direction
of motion of the
object.
Example 1
 If a force of 15.0 N is used to drag the
loaded cart for a distance of 0.90 m , how
much work is done on the loaded cart?
Solution:
W = F x s
W = 15.0 N x 0.90 m
W = 13.5 N m
W = 13.5 J
Example 2
A crane lifts a crate upwards to height of 20

m. the lifting force provided by the crane is 5

kN. Calculate the work done by the force. How
much energy is transferred to the crate?

Solution:
W = F x s

W = 5.0 kN x 20 m

W = 100 kN m

W = 100 kJ

Example 3
A 300 N force is applied to a box in the

direction XY in order to move it up a ramp of

the dimensions shown. How much work is
done when moving the box from X to Y?

Solution:
W = F x s

W = 300 N x 5 m

W = 1500 N m

W = 1500 J
