The document summarizes an article about giving students more ownership over their homework. It notes that the article advocates letting students know that failure is part of learning, giving students choices in projects, and making it safe for students to self-assess. The reader agrees that students should learn life skills and survival skills but disagrees that practice makes perfect without mastery. The reader thinks having a standardized "ticket" for student test retakes could create a routine if used by all teachers and likes the idea of letting students choose their own assessments and working in groups based on assessment choice. The reader also thinks the philosophy of trusting students' ability to take charge of their learning is a good one for teachers at their school.

List three important points made in the article/reading:
1. We let students know that not getting it is OK, that failure is crucial to learning, and that teachers will support them in the struggle. 2. students have several choices of projects 3. Once we have established that mistakes in learning are necessary and acceptable, we make it safe for students to selfassess. What are your general thoughts regarding the article? 1. When I read the analogy of the toddler learning to walk, I thought to myself, Yes, but that is survival and instinct, much of what we teach students isnt survival or instinct. How do we still emphasize life skills, which are survival, while teaching rigor? Also, sorting out essential verses nonessential. 2. Regarding They dont complete 40 essentially identical math problems reinforcing the same skill; they apply math skills to new problems. I disagree, practice makes perfect. We want mastery, and then they can apply. How can/does what you read impact North Fayette Valley High School? 1. I tried a Student Retake Request type document, and it was not successful. (See other attached document.) But if we ALL use a similar ticket perhaps that would develop a routine. 2. I like the idea of letting the students choose their own assessment. Then they could work in groups according to the assessment style they chose. If it went well (pass), continue, fail (change assessment). 3. Signs/posters of each standard to post in the room (depending upon which standard is pertinent to the day/week/chapter/unit/etc.
4. If we want students to take charge of their learning, we must
trust their ability to do so. Great philosophy for teachers at NFV!
