Answer ALL Questions

PART A (5 x 2 = 10 Marks)
1.
Define Zeroth law and First law of thermodynamics.
2.
What is meant by path function and point function.
3.
State Kelvin Planck statement and Clausius statement of Thermodynamics.
4.
What is meant by Principle of Increase of Entropy.
5.

PART - B (12+12+16=40 Marks)
Answer all questions
6. Air flows steadily at the rate of 0.5 kg/s through an air compressor, entering at 7m/s velocity, 100kPa pressure and 0.95m 3/kg,
Volume leaving at 5m/s,700kPa and 0.19m 3/kg. The internal energy of the air leaving 90kJ/kg greater than that of the air entering.
Cooling water in the compressor jackets absorbs heat from the air at the rate of 58kW.(a)compute the rate of shaft work input to the
air in kW.(b)Find the ratio of the inlet pipe diameter to the outlet pipe diameter.
(12)
7. (i)Deduce Clausius inequality and intepret it
(6)
(ii)In a reversible heat exchanger 45kg/min of water is to be heated from 60C to 115C by hot gases, which enter the heat exchanges
at 225K and flow at the rate of 90kg/min. Compute the net change of entropy. Assume specific heat for water and gases as 4.18
and 1.045kJ/kgK.
(6)
8. A reversible heat engine operates between two reservoirs at temperatures 700 0C and 500C. The engine drives a reversible
refrigerator which operates between reservoirs at temperatures of 50 0C and -250C. The heat transfer to the engine is 2500 kJ and
the net work output of the combined engine refrigerator plant is 400 kJ. (i) Determine the heat transfer to the refrigerant and the
net heat transfer to the reservoir at 50 0C; (ii) reconsider (i) given that the efficiency of the heat engine and the COP of the
refrigerator are each 45 per cent of their maximum possible values.
