What Standards (national
or state) relate to this
lesson?
(You should include ALL
applicable standards. Rarely
do teachers use just one:
theyd never get through
them all.)
Essential Understanding
(What is the big idea or
essential question that you
want students to come away
with? In other words, what,
aside from the standard and
our objective, will students
understand when they finish
this lesson?)
Objectives- What are you
teaching?
What will students know and
be able to do after this
lesson?
Include the ABCDs of
objectives: Action, Behavior,
Condition, and Degree of
mastery. (Degree of Mastery
does not have to be a %.)
Example: C: Given a
sentence written in the past
or present tense, A: the

SS.3.G.3.1 Describe the climate and vegetation in the United States, Canada, Mexico,
and the Caribbean.
SS.3.G.3.2 Describe the natural resources in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and
the Caribbean.
SS.3.G.2.5 Identify natural man-made landmarks in the United States, Canada,
Mexico, and the Caribbean.
What defines a region?
How can students describe the climate, vegetation, natural resources, and landmarks
of the United States?

Students will be able to describe important features of each of the five regions of the
United States by creating a regional poster and collaborate with groups to describe the
vegetation, natural resources, climate, and landmarks of the United States with few
errors.

student B: will be able to rewrite the sentence in future
tense D: with no errors in
tense or tense contradiction
(i.e. I will see her yesterday.)
Rationale
Address the following
questions:
Why are you teaching
this objective?
Where does this lesson fit
within a larger plan?
Why are you teaching it
this way?
Why is it important for
students to learn this
concept?
Evaluation Plan- How will
you know students have
mastered your objectives?
Address the following:
What formative evidence
will you use to document
student learning during
this lesson?
What summative evidence
will you collect, either
during this lesson or in
upcoming lessons?
What Content Knowledge
is necessary for a teacher

I am teaching these objectives to further students learning of the five regions.

Students must look deeper into each five region and be able to describe the attributes
and features that distinguishes each region from one another. Therefore, by students
working in groups with each student assigned a specific role, each group can work
together to create their regional poster. Also, it benefits the students by being active
and engaged in their learning.

Evaluation Plan:
Formative: Region Posters
I will collect the region posters to determine how groups are able to describe the
features of their region. Also, I will interact with each group, guiding them with their
process and asking questions.
Summative: Essay
Students will answer the essential question, What defines a region?

Knowledge on identifying the five regions of the United States.

to teach this material?

What background
knowledge is necessary
for a student to
successfully meet these
objectives?

Students will continue learning about the five regions. They will define the regions by
their features and describe them in a group setting. Th groups will create region
posters which will help them to be engage with describing their region.

How will you ensure

students have this
previous knowledge?
Who are your learners?
What do you know about
them?
What do you know about
their readiness for this
content?
What misconceptions
might students have
about this content?
Teaching Methods
(What teaching method(s)
will you use during this
lesson? Examples include
guided release, 5 Es, direct
instruction, lecture,
demonstration, partner word,
etc.)
Step-by-Step Plan

lesson. For example, in science, you would detail the 5 Es here

(Engage/Encountering the Idea; Exploring the Idea;
Explanation/Organizing the Idea; Extend/Applying the Idea;
Evaluation).
1. Tell students the Social Studies question of the day. What
defines a region? Ask students what comes to mind when
you think of this question?
2. Have students count off to separate them into five groups.
Since there are fourteen students in the classroom, some
groups will have 2-3 students in each. Put up the poster
paper throughout the classroom that has one region written
on each poster, a number, and the social studies page
number. Have all the students go to their corresponding
poster.
3. Explain to students that each group will have to determine
who will be the researcher, the illustrator/speaker, and the
writer. Then provide the directions for all groups.
- The researcher will read about their region on the pages written
on
their poster and focus on the information about resources,
vegetation, landmark, and climate.
- Model for the illustrator that they will draw a chart and label
each section by each feature that the researcher will be focusing
on. Also, the illustrator will need to draw what their region look
likes.
- The writer will write the information that the researcher finds
and record on their chart.
- The speaker will talk about their region to the class.

4. After the presentations, students will write an essay by

answering the essential question.
What will you do if

a student struggles with the content?

Students will work in groups and will have the support of their classmates. At the same
time, I will provide assistance for each group

What will you do if

a student masters the content quickly?

The lesson requires the participation of all group members to create their poster.
However, if one student masters the content quickly, they are helping their group
members. Also, each group will have a certain amount of time to complete their poster.

Meeting your students

needs as people and as
learners

If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural
backgrounds of your students?
If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local community?

How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
challenge during this lesson (enrichment)?
Ask students to label the states of their region. Then ask students to write a sentence
to describe what is climate and vegetation and give an example of each.
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
language support?
Use pictures and symbols to help with the explanation. Allow the student to work with
a native speaker that can help them throughout the activity.
Accommodations (If
needed)
