Assignment 5

This document contains 9 questions about matrix eigenvalues and eigenvectors. The questions cover topics such as: showing that the eigenvalues of the inverse of an invertible matrix A are the reciprocals of the eigenvalues of A; showing that adding a scalar to a matrix changes its eigenvalues; showing properties of eigenvalues of idempotent and nilpotent matrices; finding eigenvalues and eigenvectors of specific matrices; constructing bases of eigenvectors; and relating the determinant and trace of a matrix to its eigenvalues.

have the same eigenvectors?
4. Let A be an n n matrix. Show that: (a) If A is idempotent (A2 = A) then
eigenvalues of A are either 0 or 1. (b) If A is nilpotent (Am = 0 for some m 1)
