feel the unit lesson delivery went very well. The students seemed to struggle with the concept for
a little bit, yet as we moved along they became more and more confident.
Physically and Emotionally Safe Classroom
Establishing a safe classroom takes consistency and time. Since the beginning of this
year, I have strived to make the classroom a place where each student felt safe and included. In
order to make them feel emotionally safe, I try to show them I love them and not embarrass them
in front of their peers. I talk to them about their concerns and interests, but remain professional
and enforce rules and expectations. The students must also feel physically safe in their
environments. In order to assure this, I am constantly striving to develop a great classroom unity.
I do this my remaining positive and modeling kindness towards the students. I do not allow them
to bully each other and am constantly talking to them about how we should treat others. We are
actually currently reading a book called Wonder as a class. The book is about a student who
was born with face deformities, and his life being bullied. This book has really helped the
students to see from other perspectives.
Classroom Management Strategies
For this unit, we used a point system to monitor classroom management. Each group of
about 6 students was assigned a captain student. At beginning of each rotation and various times
throughout, I asked did a point check. I called on each captain and had them give me a thumbs
up, meaning positive report, or negative meaning negative report. A positive report means that all
talking is on task and the students are working productively. A negative report means the
opposite. At the end of math time, we add up all of the points. Each positive points becomes a
point for the students, and each negative point is a point for the teachers. At the end of every
month, the points are calculated for a large party. If the students win, they get the party. If the
teachers win, the teachers get the party and the students get worksheets. The points are a great
way to motivate the students in a positive way.
Evaluating Outcomes and Student Learning
Overall, I was very excited about the outcomes of this test. The students did very well on
the post-test and had fewer and fewer misunderstandings as we went through the unit. Students
who usually struggle with math, were really picking up the material. I was so happy to see the
progression. I think that smooth transitions and having the students model each problem, helped
the students to better understand and remember what they were learning.
I was disappointed to see the English Language Learners scoring lower than the average
on the post test. This shows me that I should have made more differentiations for them
individually. I should have made vocabulary books for them and or had them keep a math journal
and explain to me what they were learning.
Personal Growth and Learning
Through teaching this unit, and many others, I have learned so much! I have realized that
the students perform best when they are happy. It is okay to be silly and fun to encourage
learning. Talking is okay. I love hearing the students chatting and excited about what we are
learning. I have to remind myself of that occasionally when I want to hush the noise. The
students do need to converse and express themselves occasionally through learning. I have also
learned that students will be excited about what I am excited about. I constantly strive to have
fun and make learning exciting for them.
Mathematically speaking, I have learned to use many real world examples and
connections from the beginning. I should have done more of this in the unit. The students were
pretty confused at first. I realized how important it is also, to look through the chapter and make
clear transitions from one concept to the next.
Caring and Professional Relationships
I have developed great relationships with the students in my class. They know that I care
about them and their lives. They talk to me at recess and we have a lot of fun together. However,
they know that I am the teacher and that I will not let them walk over me. I care about the
students and work hard to help them achieve. I try hard not to embarrass the students, and if I do,
I talk to them about it and apologize for doing so.
Because the students know that I care about them, and dont want to embarrass them,
they are not afraid to participate and share answers. This has certainly helped them to grow and
learn. They have come so far this year, and in this individual lesson. I am very proud of them.
