Name of Standard: Content Knowledge
Statement of standard:
The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and
structures of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and creates learning
experiences that make these aspects of the discipline accessible and
meaningful for learners to assure mastery of the content.
Your artifact:
My artifact is a lesson plan on harvest and pumpkins. My lesson has
students dancing to a song while learning how pumpkins grow. The lesson
starts out with a scarecrow themed stretch along. Then students looked at
and passed around pictures of different types of pumpkins. Then students
were instructed to follow along to motions of how a pumpkin grows. InTASC
standard 4 he or she teaches and creates learning experiences that make
these aspects of the discipline accessible and meaningful for learners to
assure mastery of the content. Using music and picture shows culturally
relevant content to build on learners background knowledge. Also having
different types of pictures of pumpkins appreciates multiple perspectives
within the discipline. Having many different pictures helps me learn the
cultures of each student. Their reactions can educate me on their knowledge
of different types of pumpkins. Learning what they are used to is a huge help
with future lesson planning. Having different types of pictures of pumpkins
appreciates multiple perspectives and gives the children opportunities to
explore different options. These options encourage the student learning. This
Artifact falls under the teaching core cluster. The lesson plan teaches more
than how pumpkins grow but how different they are and how one student
might eat them or use them as a tool. This lesson plan is great for overall
including all children in while still keeping the common topic.
