Parenting
Mrs. Sykes
Experiences in the Parenting course are designed to assist students in developing
an understanding of the parenting process and of parenting skills. Emphasis in this course is given to the development of skills related to the parenthood decision, costs of having and raising a child, the promotion of child growth and development, effects of heredity and environment on development, rights and responsibilities of parents and children, providing nurturance, guidance techniques for promoting positive behavior, prevention of child abuse and neglect, promoting health and safety of children, caring for the sick or injured child, parenting a special needs child, helping children cope with crises, choosing professionals to help with parenting problems, selection of child-care services, jobs and careers in child and family services. Upon completion of this course, a student should possess skills necessary to provide quality care for childrenas a parent, as one employed to care for children, or as one who interacts with children in other settings.
Units to cover and be tested:
Unit 1: The Parenthood Decision Unit 2: Child Growth and Development Unit 3: Parenting Skills Unit 4: Promoting Health and Safety of Children
Needed for class:
Pen or pencil Paper Three ring binder
Grades:
Daily grades- 5-30 points, point deduction for late work
Projects- 30-60 points, point deduction if late unless excused absence Notebook checks-notebook must be organized and all assignments must be completed. Notebook checks will be after the completion of each unit. 50-75 points each Quiz- may be given weekly and worth up to 50 points. Test- test will be given after the completion of each unit, worth 100 points. If you score under 70% you can re-answer the test for half credit back. Unit test may not always be formal assessments; variations of testing comprehension include presentations, projects, etc. Final- a comprehensive final will be given at the end of the semester. EOC- end of course exam, a test given by the state covering all eight units. Cheating and/or copying on any assignment, project, or test will result in a 0 for all involved.

2. Phones are not to be used in the classroom, unless all course

Warning detention assigned up to 3 days Student sent immediately to the office
Missing work/ Absent
