Assignment 1 CE3810

This document contains 5 questions related to transportation engineering design. The first question asks to calculate the estimated single axle loads (ESALs) for a two-lane road with given traffic and growth rate parameters. The second question involves calculating stresses in dual tires using Foster and Ahlvin's method. The third question involves using a Burmister chart to design a pavement section based on plate bearing test results. The fourth question involves calculating stresses in a concrete slab due to load, temperature, and their combination using given structural and material properties. The fifth question asks to design a dowel bar system for a concrete slab joint given structural properties and allowable stress limits.

Transportation Engineering-II

(CE3810)
Assignment - 1
1. A two lane single carriageway is to be design for a design period of 15 years. Total two way traffic
intensity in the year of completion of construction is 2000 CVPD (commercial vehicles per day),
Vehicle damage factor (VDF) is 3 , lane distribution factor is 0.75 , growth rate is equal to 7.5% , find
out ESAL for the given data.
ESAL = 365 x ADT x (D) x (L) x (VDF) x (GF)

r Growth rate
n Design life
2. A set of dual tires has a total load of 2P d of 40 kN, contact radius of 11.4 cm and c/c tyre spacing of
343 mm as shown in the figure. Determine the vertical deflection, vertical stress, shear stress,
tangential stress and radial stresses by Foster and Ahlvins method.

Pd is total pressure exerted by two tyres together

Sd is center to center spacing between tyres
d is clear spacing between tyres

3. Plate bearing test conducted with 30 cm diameter plate on a soil subgrade yielded pressure of 1
kg/cm2 at 5 mm deflection. The test carried out over 18 cm base course yielded a pressure of 5 kg/cm 2
at 5 mm. Design the pavement section for a wheel load of 4100 kg with a tyre pressure of 6 kg/cm 2
and allowable deflection oh 5 mm. (Use Burmister Chart).
4. A cement concrete slab 20 cm thick is constructed over a sub base having modulus of subgrade
reaction 18 kg/cm2. Spacing between the transverse joint is 5.5 m and spacing between longitudinal
joint is 4.20 m. load P=4500 kg and temperature difference of 20 0C. radius of contact are is 15 cm
Modulus of elasticity of concrete 3 X 105 kg/cm2 Poissons ratio = 0.15 coefficient of thermal
expansion 12 X 10-6 /0C coefficient of subgrade resistance is 1.5 find out the stresses due to load ,
temperature and worst combination. (Use CX = 1.05 and CY=0.9)

5. Design a dowel bar system for a cement concrete slab for the following condition
a) Design wheel load is 4100 kg
b) Slab thickness is 20 cm
c) Joint width is 2 cm
d) Permissible stresses in Shear 1000 kg/cm2
e) Permissible stresses in Bending 1400 kg/cm2
f) Permissible stresses in Bearing 1000 kg/cm2
g) Modulus of Elasticity 3 X 105 kg/cm2
h) Poissons Ratio is 0.15
i) Modulus of subgrade 8 kg/cm2
