Engineering Design: Plug Method of Checking For Pitch Diameter and Divide of Teeth

The Plug Method is used to check the pitch diameter and accuracy of tooth divisions on a gear. A plug with a radius equal to the theoretical pitch is placed between two opposite gear teeth. If the plug contacts both teeth at the pitch points, the gear's pitch diameter and tooth spacing are correct to specification. The plug method provides a simple way to verify the pitch diameter and that the teeth are evenly spaced around the gear.

DEFINITION

Plug Method give measure for pitch diameter and the

accuracy of the division of the teeth.

Gear Pitch Diameter

The figure show a Rack Tooth touching with a Gear Tooth Space, the touching point is
at point A and B. The pitch is O

A Plug with centre at O and radius OB would fit in the rack tooth and touch it at A and
B
Since the rack touches the gear at A and B, the plug too will touch againts the gear
teeth at point A and B and have it centre on the gear pitch circle

When such plugs placed in diametrically two opposite tooth spaces, it is simple to
verify the gear pitch diameter
