Assessment Task:
You are going to pick any one newspaper article from the selection given to you.
You will then use the skills you have been developing in this unit to analyze that article. Your analysis is a
two step process:
Step One (Annotation): Annotate your chosen article (written on the article)
Step Two (Analytical Response): Write a written response to the chosen article (200 words or less).
Consider
using some of the guiding questions below to focus your writing. Please
note
you are not writing a news article you are writing an analytical
response,
showing that you understand the chosen text type, of the article of your
choosing (written on lined paper).
There are guiding questions below to help you with your analytical response writing. You do not need to
answer all questions these are a guide helping you write your response.

(Context) What is the country of origin for this newspaper? What type of newspaper is it? How might that affect the
article?
(Audience) Consider the likely target audience of the article. Are the audience likely to be from the same cultural
background as the writer? What if they are not? What information does the writer assume the reader already knows?
(Purpose / Theme) What is the main purpose for writing this article? Could there be more than one? Is there any
bias in this article and how do you know?
(Image and Layout) How does the structure or layout affect the article? What is the effect of the image on the
article? How does it support the articles purpose?
(Language Style & Technique) What is the tone of the article? How has the author used language to contribute to
the purpose of the article? What language features or individual words have an impact on the audience? Comment on
