10. What do you think can be done to stop animal abuse?
11. Are there any other types of animal abuse that you are aware of?
Question number one, Where are you from?
Since we are in an international school, we thought that it was important to see where the students
who participated in our survey were coming from, because everyone has different knowledge and
understanding on animal abuse because of cultural differences.
Question number two, What is your age?
We sent out the survey only to grade 9 and 10, so there were ages from 13 to 16. We thought it
was important to know the persons age to see how much knowledge a person has of the issue of
that age.
Question number three, What is factory farming?
There were many different answers regarding this issue. By asking this question we could see the
knowledge and understanding of the students regarding factory farming. We got answers from I
have no idea. Literally to a farm on which large numbers of livestock are raised indoors in
conditions intended to maximize production at minimal cost. Here are our results:

Question number four, How many farmed animals do you think are killed each year (not
including fish)?
This was a multiple choice question (the choices are mentioned above). Here are the results:
1.000.000-50.000.000
50.000.001-100.000.000
100.000.001-500.000.000
1.000.000.000-40.000.000.000
50.000.000.000+

This shows that most of the students who

participated in our survey were aware and close
to the actual number.
The actual number is 56 billion

Question number five, What are your feelings about animal testing? and question number
six, Is it necessary? Why?
Most of the students who participated in our survey said that they were against animal testing and
that it is inhumane. However, a great number of students did include in their answers that it is
necessary and keeps us safe. Students think it is necessary because it allows us as humans to know
how animals react to for example, medicine before putting it in humans. Also, students talked
about how it is better to test it on animals rather than humans.
Question number seven, What do you think animals feel like when being held captive (ie.
zoos)?
We asked this question to see how the students feel about zoos and to see if they would talk about
the fact that when people go to zoos they are supporting the animal captivity business, however,
no one mentioned this. Most of the students said that they feel bad and lonely and a great number
of students talked about how they wouldnt know because they havent experienced it.

Question number eight, Are you aware of the Yulin dog festival and question number nine,
(If yes) What is it?
The students that knew what The Yulin Dog Festival
is gave a pretty
accurate definition of what it is.
Here is an example: A festival in China where they
torture (skin, cook, burn) the dogs alive to finally eat
them.

Question number ten, What do you think can be done to stop animal abuse?

Most of the students talked about that raising awareness and forming organizations could really
help with stopping animal abuse. Here are some examples:
I think people should be put through a wide range of test in order to buy or adopt a pet, to test
their mental health, physical health and criminal record
Make an artificial species that cannot feel emotions but can be used for animal testing
Gradually raising awareness.

Question number eleven (last question), Are there any other types of animal abuse that you
are aware of?

The students mentioned:

Puppy mills
Fur farms
Shark finning
Animal fights
Animal hunting
Sea World
The abuse of animals at home, for example, not feeding your pet

After reading the responses we got from this survey, we could really see other peoples
perspective on animal abuse. Many students gave wonderful ideas on what can be done to stop
animal abuse. We thought that a survey would be better than an interview specifically for this

topic, because, the responses we get are anonymous so in that way students are more honest rather
in interviews where students say what the interviewers want to hear (for this topic specifically).
