Annotated Bibliography
Buddington, Steve. Barbie.Com and Racial Identity. N.p.: n.p., n.d. LSU Online Catalog. Web.
19 Nov. 2015.
This book is about how second grade female students were asked to create a Barbie doll
and the results of the doll they created and what that stated about their racial identity. The book
then goes into detail about racial identity and what molds one's identity. The book also explores
why African American children struggle with their identity.
I chose this book because it ties well with my line of inquiry. The book focuses on self
identity and the study performed, even though it is not the doll test, it is similar in testing how
children perceive color and race. The book posed certain questions which focused on how Black
children are still struggling with accepting their race and why that is.
This site is credible because I found it using the LSU database. The book is also cited and
the sources used within the book are cited.
Catherine R. Squires. Postracial Mystique: Media and Race in the 21st Century. New York:
NYU Press, 2014.Project MUSE. Web. 20 Nov. 2015.

Fall 2
This book explores many topics that are relevant in today's society. The book explores
race is what seems to be a "post racial" society. However, we all know that race still plays a huge
part in our society. The book explores race in media, including the news and television. The
author even talks about politics and America having its first African American president.
This is useful because it is the most current source that I have and it shows how media
and society shapes humans. How society tells us what is beautiful or what is right or wrong, and
how that message subconsciously is present. This will help as I analyze what makes African
American children hesistant about their racial identity.
This source is credible because I found it through the LSU catalog. It also has its
information needed to cite it.
CLARK, K. M. AND CLARK, M. P., 1950. Emotional factors in racial identification and
preference in Negro children. Journal of Negro Education, 19, 341-350.
The journal explores what factors are used to classify one's racial identification. It also
goes explores the long lasting impact of the great racial divide between whites and blacks. It also
mentions the struggle within the African American community and how children are impacted
by this. How they long to be accepted by society and that blacks are as accepted.
I chose this journal because it related to my line of inquiry about the psychological state
of children. The journal explores why it is hard for African American children to accept
themselves. The journal was also written by the Clarks, the same couple who performed the doll
test. This allows me to see their thought process, as this was written by them.

Fall 3
This source is credible because it was found through the LSU catalog. Also, it was used
as information for one of my other sources, so I wanted to check it out myself. The source is
cited and was published in the Journal of Negro Education, a reputable source.
Davis, Kiri. "Kiri Davis: A Girl Like Me. [black doll / white doll Experiment]." YouTube.
YouTube, 18 Dec. 2012. Web. 19 Nov. 2015.
This video was the focus of my gap paper. The video is filmed by an African American
teenage girl. The video explores what it is like to be an African American female in society
today. The documentary also recreates the doll test first performed by the Clarks. The results
being nearly the same.
I chose this site because it allows me to compare the doll test. Also, it gives my paper the
perspective of several African American females and their thoughts about the challenges of being
black in America. This video is very helpful because it will allow my readers to actually refer
back to the video. The readers can see the children's responses and their shamed looks about not
choosing the black doll.
The video is credible because it is made from Kiri Davis. It is also cited. The source is a
short film/ documentary that I found on YouTube. The source has a Youtube license and it is
made for educational purposes.

"NAACP Legal Defense Fund : Defend, Educate, Empower." Brown at 60: The Doll Test. N.p.,
n.d. Web. 19 Nov. 2015.

Fall 4
This site is about the first doll test performed by the Clarks. The doll test was first
performed in the 60s. It was created in response to segregation, and the effects of segregation on
African American children. The experiment was African American children being asked multiple
questions about two dolls and the doll in which they prefer, the white doll or the black doll. The
majority of the African American children chose the white doll.
I chose this site because it allows me to gather research about the initial information
about the first doll test performed. With this site, I am able to see the transformation of the doll
tests from the beginning. This site explains why the test was performed, how performed the test,
the results of the test, and the conclusion gathered from the results of the doll test.
I believe this site is credible. The site is funded by the NAACP, a well known non-profit
organization. The site is also ".org."
Du Bois W. E. B. The Negro. Philadelphia: U of Pennsylvania, 2001. Print.
This book explores what it means to be African American in America. The book explores
how a Black person will always be reminded of their race, and how in America, there will be a
struggle to find your culture. The book tells about African American history dating way back to
slavery. The book also mentions what the problems for African Americans will be in America,
one of which presented, is the lack on racial identity.
I choose this book because it follows African American culture and history. I also chose
this book because of the author and his theories African Americans. The book helps explore how
the African American culture is struggling. I think that I am iffy on this source, because it is alot
of information, it is also dated which is good for the historical point of view, but I also disagree

with some of his statements, which could help me refute that in my paper or it can just confuse
me more.
I found this source through the LSU catalog. All of the need information was available
for me to cite this source. I believe this is a credible source.
