Deposition
EQ: How is the surface of the earth worn down and built up
over time?
Topic:
Weathering, Erosion, &
Deposition
Essential Question:
What is Weathering?
Weathering is the breaking down of rocks into
particles and sediment over time.
What is Weathering?
Weathering: Rocks are broken down over time by
exposure to natural chemicals, freezing, thawing, falling and
breaking, wind, and water.
As they break down their pieces get smaller and smaller.
What is Erosion?
Erosion is the removal of rock
particles from a location.
Erosion:
the removal of
rock particles from
a location
Notes:
Weathering rocks breaking down over
time
Erosion the removal of rocks or
sediments to another location
Caused by:
Water
Wind
Ice
Gravity
Canyon
River Valley
Waterfalls
Beach Erosion
Notes:
Water Erosion
Includes:
1. Rivers & streams
2. Ocean tides & waves
3. Surface runoff
Notes:
1. Rivers & Streams
Rivers & streams carry sediment
(particles like sand, silt and clay)
River erosion can create
Waterfalls
Floodplains
valleys
Notes:
2. Ocean Tides & Waves
Waves transport sand
Waves carve out sea stacks,
caves, arches, & cliffs
Notes:
3. Surface Runoff
Runoff occurs when water
moves over the earths surface
Water from precipitation
(rain, snow, etc.) carries
particles
Wind erosion:
Wind Erosion creates
dust storms, hoodoos,
and arches.
Wind erosion:
Hoodoos
Wind erosion:
Arches
Notes:
Wind Erosion
Wind transports particles
Wind erosion creates:
- Dust storms
- Hoodoos
- Arches
glaciers (glay-shurz)
Ice Erosion
Glacial Lakes
Moraines
Kettle Lakes
Drumlins
Notes:
Ice Erosion
Glaciers (ice sheets) move
slowly, carving out the earth
Ice erosion creates:
- U-Shaped valleys
- Glacial & kettle lakes
- Moraines & drumlins
Notes:
Gravity Erosion
Gravity pulls sediment downhill
Gravity erosion creates:
- Landslides
- Mudslides
- Creeps
END - Erosion
What is Deposition?
Deposition is the process in which
sediment is laid down in new
locations.
Think about it
What needs to happen before deposition
can occur?
