Authoring
Definition: creating a program for
computer applications such as
computer assisted learning or
multimedia products. An author
writes software programs, especially
hypertext or multimedia products.
The main definition of authoring is the writer of a book, article or other
text, so in terms of media, it relates
to the writing / creating of apps.
Authoring
Interactive media authoring tools:
Multimedia authoring tools allow us
to organise and edit multimedia
products. Multimedia tools include
tools that can create, edit and
convert multimedia elements such as
animation and video clips. Basic
multimedia authoring tool features
include organising, editing,
performance tuning and playback
Authoring
Planning: When planning a
multimedia product, you need a
detailed story board, navigation
chart, a mood board including:
Colour schemes, font size, font style,
buttons, links, names of files to be
used, copyright information, written
permission to use copyright
information (if you use copyrighted
material) and assets that will be
Authoring
Design: The design is what the
overall product will look like, for
example the colour scheme, text
style, mast heads etc. Most of the
design should be covered on the
mood board.
Authoring
Development: When developing a
multimedia product you have to
create an in depth storyboard
labelled with the colour scheme, font
style, size and positioning. The story
board should also include what
images are going to be on the
product, for example the GAP travel
logo and where to put it.
Authoring
Production: Before producing the
multi media product, you should
have already made a detailed story
board and found / made some
images to use. If you already have
these it will be a lot easier to make
the product as everything is already
considered, all you have to do then is
make it!
Applications
Multimedia applications are applications
that use a variety of different multimedia
sources (e.g. text, graphics, audio, video,
animation) within the application, to make
it more interactive and multi-layered.
Uses - these applications can be used for
a variety of things, such as social
networking (e.g. Facebook, Twitter),
entertainment (e.g. BBCiplayer, YouTube),
health and fitness, travel and news.
Applications
Games:
Gaming applications are competitive
apps that users can play, interact with
and control for fun (e.g. Angry Birds).
The product Im making will not be a game,
however it will share some of the functions
of a game (e.g. the user being to interact
and control the app).
Application
Education:
These applications are used to give
information (e.g. News apps), provide help with
studies (e.g. BBC Bitesize) and learn online
(e.g. Open University and distance learning)
My app will be educational as it will contain
facts and information on different activities.
People will be able to use the application in
order to learn more about the activities to see
whether or not they are suitable for them.
Application
Assessing an application means to go
over it and check for any spelling
mistakes, grammar mistakes, coding
mistakes or glitches in general.
Assessment: to assess the completed product I will
show a few people it and let them go through it and
give me feedback, for example, the hyperlink to ___
doesnt work or the picture isnt relevant to this slide.
Then I will take the feedback and improve the product
until there arent any mistakes.
Format
HDML is a coding language used for the
base of a web page. HDMLs consist of
tags/hyperlinks all in brackets, this
changes the format of the website by
changing: images, text, font, colours etc..
Web: The format of the product will be in
Director and will require Director to open
it. It will not be available to open online
unless I change the format or publish it
along with the software online.
Format
An information kiosk is a public computer often
found in shops or certain businesses that gives
information and can be used to pay for items, for
example self service at grocery stores allow you to
scan and pay for your items yourself.
Information kiosk: The product will be able to be
printed out or made into a paper booklet. If it is
printed out all of the scrolling images wont work
and hyperlinks will not work. Instead I would write
all of the information on the product instead of
hyperlinking different websites.
Format
Some web applications allow us to create and edit
presentations which are also known as
presentation graphics. They consist of words and
pictures that help to support speeches, public
lectures and can also be used to provide visuals for
a conference.
Presentations: The product will be able to be
shown as a presentation. It will have hyperlinks
throughout so that it is easy to get to the content
page, sub content pages and individual pages as
they will all be hyperlinks together.
Format
Interactive TV allows viewers to discuss and
comment about the content and
advertisements on the channel. This is so
the producers can receive feedback and
suggestions on how to improve.
Interactive tv: This product is interactive as it has a
verity of hyperlinks that take you to different parts
of the product, for example in the content page it
has links to take you to the sub content page.
Format
A hand held device is a small computer,
normally weighing under 2 pounds and using a
touch interface with a miniature key board.
Hand held devices: The product will have to be
modified in order to view it better on a mobile
phone or tablet. This is because the phones /
tablets format is different and the dimensions
differ to a monitor. An example of this is
Windows 10 as they developed it for computer
but have to alter it to go onto Windows phones.
Assets
A sound file / audio file is captured sound that can be
played back, an example of this is a music video has a
sound file attached to it that allows sound to be played,
without the sound file there would only be the video
playing.
Sound: The sound cannot be used if it is copyrighted, the only
way you can use copyrighted sound file is if you contact the
owner and receive written permission to use it. Apart from that
you can find a royalty free track online, or you could create your
own sound file digitally, for example using software called garage
band.
I will be using loyalty-free sounds or will make my own using
Adobe software.
Assets
A text file is a structure built of electronic text.
For example a word document which has lines
and lines of electronic text.
Text: If you find text that you want to use, but
is copy righted, you will have to contact the
owner asking for written permission. When
contacting them you will have to tell them
what work it is and how you want to use it. You
could also get royalty free text or write your
own for the product.
Assets
A video file is a file that allows you to play
captured video feed/ footage. An example of this
is a music video as without the video file there
would only be music playing and no video display.
Assets
Vector graphics use paths which travel through
nodes, this means when you enlarge or shrink
a vector graphic it will stay the same and will
not pixelate.
Vector graphics: For images, I will use vector
graphics instead of bitmap as bitmap wont
keep all aspects of the image the same when
enlarging or shrinking it, where vector graphics
will keep everything the same when enlarging
or shrinking and will not pixelate.
Assets
Computer images also known as JPEGS or
GIFs (if animated) are electronic pictures.
An example of electronic pictures are
pictures you take with phone or tablet as
they are made and stored electronically.
Images: Depending on the file data limits I will
use ether a lot of HD images or a few low
resolution images. They will be vector graphics to
avoid pixelating and I will animate them to be
scrolling images.
Limitations
There are many different types of content, for
example: video clip, movie clip (video and sound),
episode (like a movie clip only longer) or a movie
(like a movie clip but normally around 90+
minuets).
Type of content: What will be included in the
product, for example images, videos, animations
etc. Depending on the content you might need
certain software to run the product, for example
some animations will need ether adobe flash or
adobe fireworks to run.
Limitations
Download time varies on the size of the file that
is being downloaded and your personal internet
speed, for example; fibre optic (50mbps)
downloading a 12Mb picture would be instant
where a slow internet speed (e.g. 12mbps)
downloading a 5Gb game would take hours.
Download time: Depending on how large the product file
is determines weather the file takes a lot of time or a few
seconds to download. For example 3GB will take a while
to download where 100MB will download quickly.
Limitations
The size of a computer file is measured in bytes,
it goes from bytes to KB, Mb, Gb, Tb and Pb (Pb
isnt currently available to the public.
