LESSON OUTLINE

INTRODUCE (4 June - 10 minutes)

Introduce the idea of World Environment Day (WED). As a class, discuss the importance of looking after
the environment and ways that students help care for the environment.

Present concept of the 3Rs reduce, reuse, recycle, write up on whiteboard.

EXPLORE (5 June - 15 minutes)

Encourage students to recall the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) write them up on the whiteboard.

Cut up students fruit to share during the activity.

As a class, discuss how to separate rubbish for recycling purposes.

With students sitting in a circle, place waste bins and food scrap cut outs on the floor and demonstrate
determining which bin a piece of rubbish goes into.

Hand out cut outs (1 per student) and ask students to think-pair-share with the person next to them,
which bin they would put their piece of rubbish in and why.

Go around the circle and ask each student to put his or her piece of rubbish in a bin and state why they
chose that particular bin.

REFLECT/SUMMARISE (5 June - 5 minutes)

Students to gather together on the floor in preparation for the following lesson.
