Artifact Reflection
Title of Artifact: Worksheets used for different instructional strategies

Artifact Description
The artifact includes a lesson and different worksheets used while teaching classes in my special
education classroom. Each worksheet was used for a different instructional teaching strategy.
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment
The artifact primarily aligns with Standard 4 Instructional Strategies: teachers know how to
teach, which states,
The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies, including the use of
technology, to encourage children's development of critical thinking, problem solving, and
performance skills.
The following artifacts and descriptions represent: direct instruction, questioning, self-critiquing,
lecture, co-operative learning and technology to enhance instruction.
For this activity, I used a few different instructional strategies. The students were first presented
with the information in lecture format. I showed the students different examples of problems and
used real world input, such as candy bars and pizza to help them make connections. The
following day, I had students work with an iPad to create a given fraction using manipulatives. If
the answer was correct, the students moved on to the next problem. If not, they had to keep
attempting the problem. This allowed them to fully understand what they were doing before
they moved on. While using the iPad program, students really had to stop and think hard about
what they were being asked to do. They had to think critically about the problem and how to
logically come up with a solution. While lecture format is great, students need to create their
own learning experiences so that they can make connections in order to make learning stick.
During two lessons on myths and fables, the students was asked to recall their knowledge and
explain the difference between a myth and a fable. The student was looking at comparing and
contrasting. The myth vs. fable worksheet was used for this lesson.
One of my teaching goals is for students to improve their paragraph writing skills. I was able to
incorporate a writing activity into one of my lessons. The student was given prompts to write the
paragraph, and it was broken up into steps. The students organized their thoughts and wrote a
paragraph. Once this was done, I asked the student to self-monitor or critique their work. With
another color writing utensil, the student was asked to make corrections or note any words that
were confusing, spelled wrong, etc.
During an Applied Math lesson, I teaching using direct instruction. I demonstrate or model
different examples and then the students practice those problems while I am in the room with
them. I also use questioning techniques during direct instruction and while the students are
practicing. I like to ask the students to explain to me what they did. I also like to ask students to
stop and think of a realistic situation in which a problem could relate and check the validity of
their answer based on whether the answer would make sense in a real life situation. Student
also work with each other to solve problems. I ask students to solve a problem on the
smartboard and they must show each step after they discuss with each other how to solve the
problem.

The artifact primarily aligns with standard KSD1.d Demonstrates knowledge of resources, which
states, The candidate actively seeks materials and resources to enhance instruction by utilizing
school and district resources as well as other resources available outside the school/district.
For this activity, I spent a lot of time searching for ideas online. I had a basic idea of what I
wanted to do, but then I went in search of ways to improve or make the assignment more
interactive and educational for the students. Incorporating different modes of instruction can
have a great impact on a students learning. Creating hands on interaction is key when it comes
to a special education setting like mine.

What I learned about teaching/learning from this experience:
Through reflecting on this standard, I learned that it is important to use different types of
instructional strategies in the classroom. By incorporating different strategies, you can also
incorporate different means of technology. Technology plays a large role in our society
today. When students have the opportunity to work with technology and improve their
knowledge base for technology, it is a benefit to the student. I learned that students learn better
when they are actively engaged in their learning. When they are able to focus more on their own
interests, they take more away from a lesson. Connecting material to students interests
is always a plus.
What I learned about myself as a prospective educator as a result of this experience/artifact:
I learned that I am very good at incorporating technology in my different lessons and that I am
good and incorporating different types of instruction. When I differentiate my instruction,
students have the opportunity to try new things and to learn in a different way. I think that I need
to continue what I am doing and make sure that I dont get complacent in my lesson plans and
do the same thing day after day. Pushing myself to find activities that will make the students
think outside the box needs to be a priority.
