determination of COD was Carried out by closed titrimetric reflux method. The Chemical Oxygen
Demand (COD) method indicates the quantity of oxygen required to oxidize the organic matter in a
waste sample, under specific conditions of oxidizing agent, temperature, and time.
Apparatus:
1. Digestion vessels (vial)2.
2. COD Reactor
3. Burette
4. Pipette
5. Sucker
Reagents:
K2Cr2O7
Concentrated H2SO4
Ferron indicator
Procedure:
Digestion vessels were washed with 20% H2SO4 before initiating any experimental work to
avoid contamination which could produce interferences. H2SO4 was measured and added in
digestion vessels. Sample and K2Cr2O7 was added in vessels. Sulfuric acid reagents were run
down inside of vesseles so an acid layer is formed under sample digestion solution layer.
Caps of vessels were tightly caped so that solution may not leak out. Vessels were inverted
several several time to mix completely.
Digestion vessels were placed in COD reactor which was preheated to 1500c. These vessels
were placed in test tube rack to let them cool down to room temperature.
Caps of vessels were removed and solution was transferred to beaker for further process 1-2
drops of ferron indicator was added. The color of solution turned blue-green. Then this solution
subjected to titration against ferrous ammonium sulphate. The end point of titration was reddish
hue.
Similar procedure was carried out with blank containing reagents and volume of distilled water
equal to that of sample was titrated.
