WEEK 1
DEC 2015 Q2
Question (a) ask for dynamic model for liquid level: i.e. dh/dt.
Liquid level, h can be derived from volume of reactor, V. Thus, start
from TCE!!
STEP 5: Write down formula for V = f(h). Then insert the equation into
the TCE.
This question ask for mass fraction of acetic acid, so, use CCE. Work
using mass of the process fluid, M and mass flowrate, (kg/s),
instead of F (m3/s).
STEP 6: Write down the general formula for CCE use mass flowrate,
instead of moles.
STEP 7: Write balance for acetic acid. Assumption: only water
vapourises and water is not included in acetic acid compound balance:
STEP 8: This question ask for dxA/dt only and nothing is mentioned
about constant volume. So, use product rule.
DEC2016 Q5
This question ask for concentration of organism, only (unit: mol/m 3.day).
So, we have to assume volume is not constant. Thus, we have to start
with TCE and then CCE to solve for this problem.
STEP 4: Write the general equation for TCE and derive the equation. Since
this is ALL liquid system, then the densities are all assumed to be constant.
STEP 5: Then write down the CCE statement: Use mole balance since the
information of concentrations are all given in mol/m3. Check the units.
Organism increases as it consumes substrates, thus + Vrx.
