Purpose and Lesson

Standard(s):
5.9a: represent categorical data with
bar graphs or frequency tables and
numerical data, including data sets of
measurements in fractions or
decimals, with dot plots or stem-andleaf plots
5.9c: solve one- and two-step
problems using data from a
frequency table, dot plot, bar graph,
stem-and-leaf plot, or scatterplot

Student
Objectives:
1. Students will
be able to
recognize
different
types of
graphs and
interpret
data
accurately.
2. Students will
be able to
breakdown
graphs and
differentiate
data.
3. Students will
be able to

Understanding goals(s):
Students will understand the
purpose of a bar graph/frequency
table.
Students will understand how to
create a bar graph and frequency
table.
Students will learn use data from
bar graphs and frequency tables to
answer questions.
Students will be able to work
together to create their own bar
graph.

Assessment of
Objectives:
Informal: Observe
students while they
create their own bar
graphs.
Ask students
questions during and
after the lesson to
check for
comprehension.
Formal: n/a

Essential Question(s):
What is the purpose of a bar
graph?
Why do you think it is important
that we organize information?
What is a frequency table?
Why do you think we use frequency
tables?
What kind of information could you
use a frequency table for? Bar
graph?
Does a bar graph or frequency
table just have to be for math or
can you use it in other subjects?
Lesson Steps/Activities including Timeline & Grouping
Anticipatory Set (activate prior knowledge): The teacher
will ask students what they know about bar graphs and frequency
tables. What their purposes are and the different parts that make
up these graphs.
Objective/Purpose: The teacher will discuss with the students
the purpose of a frequency table and bar graph. The purpose of
this lesson is for students to understand what a bar graph and
frequency table are. How to create one and use the information
in the table or graph to answer questions.
Students will also be reviewing and learning about already
covered topics in science in their stations that they will be
rotation thru after the graphing lesson.
Instructional Input/Modeling (direct teach): The teacher
