I do: Teacher will model filling in a number line, based on the numbers given at each
end and the number of hash marks between each end point. Using the hundreds
chart, the teacher will demonstrate how to round the numbers provided and place
them on the number line. Teacher will complete 3-4 number lines on her own.
We do: Students will lead discussion in how to complete the number line and how to
place the rounded numbers. Numbers 1-4 of MM workbook page 23 will be completed
as a group.
You do: Students will complete MM workbook page 23 on their own.
Modifications (what are the modifications needed in each part of the lesson) : Students who
receive modifications will complete questions 1-4 of MM workbook page 23 in a small
group with coteach teacher. All questions and directions from the worksheet will be
read aloud.
Extension (what will you do to go deeper into this topic): Students will record a two digit
number onto a sheet of paper and play Snowball Rounding as a group. Students will
toss their paper into the center of the room, get a new snowball and round that number to
the nearest ten. Repeat process until students have rounded multiple numbers.
Elaboration (what else might you need to do/say to teach this skill/concept): Students who
struggle with rounding numbers will revisit the anchor chart created at the beginning
of the lesson. The coteach teacher will come up with example numbers to be rounded
and students will do so on a small whiteboard. Once there is better understanding,
reintroduce the placement of the numbers on the number line.
Closure (objective & purpose are restated; address how are you going to include the students in
this): Today, we learned about how to represent rounded numbers on a number line. It
is important that we learned this today because we are going to begin rounding to the
nearest tens and hundreds places tomorrow. Before we finish up with math, explain to
a partner how you would round the number 254.
Assessment (how will you know when the student knows the information or can do the skill youve
taught): Students will be assessed in their completion of MM workbook page 23.
