LESSON PLAN

Name: Kelly Bennett Date: October 17, 2022

Subject: Math Topic: use place value to subtract

Grade: Third Length of Lesson: 45 minutes/1 days

Big Idea (Essential Question): How do you use place value to subtract?
Domain: Number and Operations in Base Ten

Standard: M.3.11

Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place
value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and
subtraction.

Cluster: Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-
digit arithmetic.

*Specific Objective:
Students will demonstrate understanding by verbally answering questions and completing 4
problems from GoMath with 85% accuracy, as assessed by workbook page.

Introduction:
Teacher will introduce the topic place value to subtract by reviewing the number places.
Teacher will discuss that numbers have a place value. Teacher will explain that we will be
working with 3-digit numbers. The teacher will say that we will be working with numbers in the
ones, tens, and hundreds place.

Method(s):
Whole group discussion, group work, individual work

Materials:
 Smart board
 marker
 white board
 dry erase marker
 ones, tens, hundreds chart
 Go Math technology website Think Central
Direct Instruction:
Teacher will begin lesson by writing the number 452 on the whiteboard. Teacher will also place
an empty number chart up on the smartboard using the Elmo. The teacher will tell the students
how to place the numbers in the correct spot in the empty number chart. The 4 will go in the
hundreds spot. 5 will go in the tens place and 2 will go in the ones spot. The teacher will then
write the number 243 under the first number on the whiteboard. Teacher will write the number 2
in the hundreds place, 4 in the tens place and 3 under the ones place. All these numbers will be
written under the first number in the empty number chart. The teacher will tell students that they
must line up the numbers before they can subtract. The teacher will then tell the students that
they need to subtract the ones place first. They will need to borrow from the tens place. The
teacher will show the students how to do this by using the number blocks. This will help the
students understand that we are taking 10 from the tens place. The teacher will then continue to
the tens place and the hundreds place. Explaining as they continue. The teacher will then write
the second subtraction equation 764-357. Teacher again will explain where to put the numbers
on the empty number chart. Teacher will again show the students how to get the answer.

Guided Practice:
Teacher will write the equation 278-165 on the white board. Students will need to write the
equation on their empty number chart under the correct number position. Teacher will walk
around making sure the students have put the numbers into the right column. Students will then
need to complete the equation. Students may use the number blocks if they need help with
subtracting. Teacher will walk around helping those who need help. Teacher will then
demonstrate how to complete the problem. Students will then watch the video on Think Central
website.

Independent Practice:
Students will then complete pg. 65 questions 1,2, 3, 9 and page 66 questions 1 and 2. Students
may use the empty number chart if they need to.

Differentiation:
All students may use an empty number chart to help with aligning problems correctly if they
need to.
Tier 1: Students will need to complete problems. Once they are finished, they are to complete the
think deeper questions on pg. 65.
Tier 2: Students will need to complete the individual practice problems and should use the empty
number chart to help them align the numbers correctly. Students may ask their partner if they are
not understanding the problem.
Tier 3: Students need to complete the individual practice problems and must use the empty
number chart to help them align the number correctly. Students may ask their partner if they are
not understanding the problem. Students will be given a paper with the hundreds, tens, and ones
place listed so they can view what each place is called.

Formative Assessments:
Teacher will assess students by observing their answers in guided practice, teacher will observe
the answers on their workbook pages.

Lesson Closure:
Teacher will have students complete an exit ticket. They must write in order the number places.

Time & Resources:

Students will complete this lesson in 1 day 45 minutes.
