Population Ecology

Teachers: Amanda Felio

Subject: 7th Grade Science

Standard:

Strand 4 Concept 3 PO 4. Evaluate data related to problems associated with population growth
(e.g., overgrazing, forest management, invasion of non-native species) and the possible solutions.
68.RST.1. Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of science and technical texts.
Objective (Explicit):

o
o
o
o

SWBAT:
Discuss with a partner the possible factors affecting the sea lions population change
Describe how populations of one animal affect populations of another species
Formulate hypotheses and predictions regarding this issue
Support their hypotheses/predictions with textual evidence
Evidence of Mastery (Measurable):

Include a copy of the lesson assessment.

Provide exemplar student responses with the level of detail you expect to see.
Assign value to each portion of the response

The students will fill out a worksheet as we go through the discussion.

Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex):

How will you review past learning and make connections to previous lessons?
What skills and content are needed to ultimately master this lesson objective?
How is this objective relevant to students, their lives, and/or the real world?

SWBAT:
Identify why a population may increase or decrease
Discuss with a partner why they think a population is decreasing in this case study
Discuss why the fish population may be affecting the population of the sea lions
Apply the textual evidence in order to develop their hypotheses
Key vocabulary:

Population
Endangered species
Protected species
Predator
Prey

Opening (state objectives, connect to previous learning, and make relevant to real life)
How will you activate student interest?
How will you connect to past learning?
How will you present the objective in an engaging and student-friendly way?

How will you communicate its importance and make the content relevant to your students?

The teacher will ask the students in the warm up question Is it humans responsibility to help
endangered animals? Why or why not?. Next the teacher will show the students a PowerPoint
with pictures of the sea lions in Alaska and Russia. The teacher will explain to the students that
they will be reading about the populations of these animals and discussing why the populations of
these animals are changing.

The teacher will read the first paragraph

then ask students to volunteer to read the
rest. The teacher will show a PowerPoint
presentation that correlates with the
reading.

Listen to the teacher read and quietly follow

along with the reading. Look at the PowerPoint
slides that go with the reading when it is time to
do so.

The teacher will include guiding questions in

the reading for the students to answer
independently before, during and after the
discussions.

The students will independently the questions

on the handout. The students will be asked to
keep their answers to themselves and just
answer to the best of their ability.

I do not anticipate any accommodations being needed for this portion of the lesson as it
if just for the teachers information.

Closing/Student Reflection/Real-life connections:

How will students summarize and state the significance of what they learned?
Why will students be engaged?

The teacher will summarize the reading that was done in class with the students and ask if there
are any more questions or concerns regarding the material. In addition, the teacher will re-ask the
students Is it humans responsibility to help endangered animals? Why or why not? and If so
what can/should we do to protect the Steller Sea Lions?
