Copyright and Fair Use:

A How-To for Students!

Julia Cable and Corey Rabus
February 17th, 2016

Questions to think about for your work:

How do I know if I am giving credit to people where credit is due?
How do I know if I can use certain materials in my projects?
How do I avoid stealing other peoples ideas?
Due to Copyright and Fair Use Laws, there are ways we can avoid these problems!

Copyright definition
Copyright is a particular set of laws that help to protect peoples ideas and work.
These laws are put into place to make sure that an individual gets to keep credit for
their work.
FUN FACT: Copyright laws were introduced to the American government in the
Constitution in 1789!

Copyright Image
Why am I allowed to use this image in this presentation?

I can use this image because images can be downloaded from the internet for
student projects and teacher lessons - just like this one!

Copyright Video
What rules can we look at to understand that we are able to use this video in this
presentation?

We can look to copyright laws to tell us that we can use

multimedia in projects but just as long as it is only 10
percent or three minutes long (whichever is shorter)!

Fair Use Definition

According to Standford University Libraries, Fair use is a copyright principle
based on the belief that the public is entitled to freely use portions of copyrighted
materials for purposes of commentary and criticism.

Confusing?!

Well, in simpler terms, Fair Use means that you can use material if it is available to
the public when used for appropriate circumstances!

Fair Use Image

The image to the right is available to us under Fair
use. While we do not have specific permission to use
it, it is widely available and we, as teachers, are
using this particular photograph for educational
purposes.

Fair Use Video

We can use this video under Fair use
regulations because it is widely
available and (in this case) is being
used for both humor and education.

What to know about Fair Use

You cannot alter the IP in most cases.
You must give credit for the IP.
Include this statement somewhere in your work:
"Portions of this presentation (or document, work, etc.) are used under Fair
Use guidelines. Further duplication or distribution is prohibited."
After two years you cannot use the work unless you get permission from the IP
owner.

Conclusion
Make sure when you use your resources that you are using them legally!

It is important to give credit where credit is due, so always be thinking of Copyright

and Fair Use laws (Mostly because, well, its the law!).

Are there any questions?

This presentation incorporates copyrighted materials use under

claim of Fair Use. Further Distribution Is Prohibited.
