Comparative Study

Jose Tinoco

Introduction: My comparative study looks at the impact religion has made in the world with the
artwork of many artists works. Being raised Catholic, I have always been interested into what I
have learned about God and how many artists created artwork based on biblical events. I will then
focus on Leonardo Da Vincis The Last Supper, and Michelangelo's The Pieta and The Last
Judgement. These artists have inspired me in the past with my work because of their interest in
their work with religion.

Religion and the Renaissance

Beyond a doubt truth bears the same relation to falsehood as light to darkness.
Life is pretty simple: You do some stuff. Most fails. Some works. You do more of what works. If it works
big, others quickly copy it. Then you do something else. The trick is the doing something else.
People react to fear, not love - they don't teach that in Sunday School, but it's true.

Every now and then go away, have a little relaxation, for when you come back to your work your
judgment will be surer. Go some distance away because then the work appears smaller and more of it
can be taken in at a glance and a lack of harmony and proportion is more readily seen.

Principles for the Development of Complete Mind:

science of art. Study the art of science. Develop your
senses - especially learn how to see. Realize that
everything connects to everything else.
The painter has the Universe in his mind and hands.
Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry
is painting that is felt rather than seen.

Michaelangelo
I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him
free. The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting
our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim
too low, and achieving our mark. Lord, grant that I may
always desire more than I can accomplish.

Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is

the task of the sculptor to discover it.
Death and love are the two wings that bear the good
man to heaven

The Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci (1498)

The Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci is based on the last time Jesus Christ had supper with his
disciples where he introduced the Eucharist before he was crucified. Da Vinci remade the scene where
Jesus gives his disciples the bread and the wine and says someone will betray him but doesnt say who
that person is. It is a painting of tempera on gesso, pitch, and mastic. Viewers identify the history of this
true reality that happened many years ago. And why so much focus on religion. Most renaissance work
were based on the Catholic religion. It looks at
ancient traditions and classic art. This piece
Identifies the scenery the viewer should look at.
To identify when this happened and seeing how it
did. In some room and who is present. The meaning
is the history that happened in that supper.

Pieta by Michelangelo (1499)

Sculptures like the Pieta was done during the renaissance art
movement depicting history using classic art and ancient
traditions that depict history that happened in religion. This
sculpture done by Michelangelo, represents when Jesus was
brought down from the cross and Mary is holding her child. This
sculpture uses classic techniques. It shows how patient the artist
had to be into making the folds that show to be a robe. Most
artists were unable to do such a thing but Michelangelo was able
to do so and do an amazing job. Also shows the interest in
religion of the artist making other art based on Jesus. The Renaissance movement depicts real
movements that happened. Pieta represents an event in the Roman Catholic church that is important.
Michelangelo followed and knew the word of the lord and inspired him to create this piece. It took time to
make the folds in a sculpture like this that makes it outstanding.

The Last Judgement by Michelangelo (1541)

Another piece by Michelangelo and this time a painting. The Last
Judgement is painted in the Sistine Chapel. This artwork shows
another Religious figure. The Last Judgement is the prediction
of when the world ends and Jesus will come up to us and ask us
how we lived our lives. Again, the techniques used here were
classic techniques and you see a lot happening in this painting.
The viewer can identify the problems facing. Classic art of how
people used to be drawn like, the background seems to be the sky.
You can identify that some people are struggling to get up to the sky
or heaven as there is chaos under them. While others seem calm
and waiting for the Last Judgement of them. You can see the bad in
in people and how Michelangelo uses them as the bad people in this world and why they cannot live in
heaven. The artwork has a deep meaning with strong connections to religion and a lot of detail is seen in
this painting.

The Last Supper and The Last Judgement

The Creation of these two pieces come from the same time period but different artists. They both focus
on religion of the Catholic Church. Each with a different meaning of what happened for that event in the
Roman Catholic history. Both try to reach out to the world to understand the importance of this religion.
Da Vinci shows the room from the last supper showing jesus with his disciples about to have diner.
Michelangelos work however, identifies a deeper meaning into the last judgement and adding more to it
like more feeling and more detail to his work. They are both famous artworks but different in style. Both
bring out important things where the last supper we learn of the Eucharist but a tragic prediction that
eventually happen. The Last Judgement predicts how we will be judged the
day we die with a more intense
feeling.

The Last Supper and Pieta

Each artwork is similar in part of their theme, religion, but with a different meaning. The Pieta is a sculpture while
the Last Supper is a painting. Each, I believe is a continuous event. The Last Supper depicts the prediction when
Jesus knows someone will turn him in which would lead to his death. The Pieta is after he had died and Mary is
carrying him. However, the sculpture brings out a more lifelike model of Jesus and memory. I get the idea of her
sorrow for her lost child. The Last Supper is more of just seeing them preparing to eat while most people dont
identify the true meaning behind it. I see both deep with what the artist wanted their art to represent.

Pieta and The Last Judgement

These two pieces are both done by Michelangelo. Michelangelo really
seemed to focus on religion in a lot of his work more than Da Vinci I believed.
These two artworks I believe have a lot in common. Not only for the religion
part but how he made his art. He put a lot of detail into both of his artworks.
They justify the reason of how Jesus was chosen to live. He died to save
us
to make us see him for the better of our lives. He also wrote or said about his
Last Judgement of us when we die. The Pieta has
a lot of detail to it. Not only the time it takes to make
aa
a sculpture nice and clean and not messed up. But
ak
making folds is hard things and he accomplished it.
Th The
Last Judgement is also the same. The painting has
a a a lot
of detail showing how it is happening and why it is
the
way it is.

Influence from Da Vinci

For most of my work, I had influence from Da Vincis art. What Inspired me was his
use of religion in his work. Religion has always been a big part of my life and I have
used it for influence in many of my art. The Last Supper had also been a big
inspiration. It represents something about Jesus, which is what inspired me to do my
block print title Forgiveness. While The Last Supper shows Jesus and his disciples,
it inspire me with that very topic because Im seeking forgiveness from God for my sins
praying in the darkest moments. Like in the Last Supper when Judas betrayed Jesus
when Jesus knew it was him. I got the idea from there because Judas felt sorry.

religion. Him doing this and knowing the background inspired my work.

Influence from Michelangelo

I had the same inspiration from Michelangelo. I felt he was more

Process and Connection

The simple process of the big theme of Religion is putting that theme with my work and adding things
that have been recognized with things that symbolize religion. Like a cross and other things that I see in
my religion and have been part of or heard of like praying or when at church they read of the sacred
scriptures and become inspired by those words.
