This report includes: School/class context statement and evaluative comments based on the eight BCCT
Standards.
Randerson Ridge Elementary School is located in north Nanaimo. The communitys socio-economic status
would be considered middle to high. The school has a reputation for academic achievement. Parents inculcate
in their children the value of a good education. They tend to take an interest in how their children are doing in
school. The school enrolls 320 children in an English language program from kindergarten to grade 7. The
schools mission statement reads: To recognize the strengths of each child and encourage development of the
individuals full potential in the academic, physical, emotional, social and aesthetic areas as preparation for
lifelong learning.
Ms. Heim enrolls a class of 27 grade 7 students. She has created a very positive and respectful learning
environment. She is fortunate to work with an experienced and talented sponsor teacher who supports and
mentors her- providing valuable tips based on teaching experience.

Value and Care For Students
Ms. Heim has demonstrated a high degree of sensitivity and concern for the children in her care. At all times, she is
respectful of her students and has created a safe learning environment for them. She is learning each individuals
strengths and needs. She has a clear understanding of boundaries between teacher and student. She has promoted
student self-esteem while maintaining control of the learning environment.
Role Model Who Acts Ethically And Honestly
Ms. Heim acts with a high degree of dignity, honesty and professionalism. She dresses and acts in a manner that is
appropriate and professional. She has a very calm, controlled way about her and she sets a good tone in the classroom.
She is accountable for conduct while on duty as well as off duty. She has read the BCTF Code of Ethics and is aware of
the implications of the Code. She is an excellent role model.
Knowledge Of Student Growth And Development
Ms. Heim is becoming aware of the individual differences and needs of the students in her care. Moreover, she has a
clear understanding of the learners at this age. Lesson planning, delivery, and sequencing of lessons reflect her
understanding of student development. Learning about adjustments when appropriate to accommodate students learning
differences is ongoing.
Value the Involvement and Support of Parents, Guardians, Families and Communities in the School
Ms. Heim respects the opinions and feedback from parents. She produced a very good letter to parents advising them of
Aboriginal Education activities that were planned. She appears confident in initiating conversations with parents.
Effective Practices In Classroom Management, Planning,Instruction, Assessment, Evaluation, And Reporting
Ms. Heim has demonstrated good planning of individual lessons and units. She is thoughtful, analytical, and thorough!
Moreover, she designs lessons with clear learning intentions in student friendly language. She demonstrates excellent
organizational skills. She possesses strong teacher presence and has earned the respect of students. She has set out
clear expectations for her students. She is able to rely on her sponsor teacher for suggestions to improve teaching and
then implement the suggestions. Lesson delivery has been strong due to a variety of instructional strategies and
resources which are appropriate to students developmental needs.
Have A Broad Knowledge Base And Understand Subject Areas Being Taught
Ms. Heim has a broad knowledge base for the subjects she has taught. She is willing to take on challenges eagerly the
blanket exercise lesson related to Aboriginal Education come to mind. She prepared her long term planning matrices
thoroughly, logically, and sequentially. Learning outcomes were specific and lessons built on previous learning. She has
had some experience using the new B. C. curriculum and incorporating it in her lessons.

Engage In Career-Long Learning


Ms. Heim reflects well on the lessons she has taught. She is open and appreciative of feedback and often implements
suggestions immediately. She has attended the PLC activities in the school along with staff members. She attended the
district Pro D day and a school based Pro D day.
Contribute to the Profession
While at Randerson Ridge Elementary School this year, Ms. Heim has shared units and resources with her peers. She
has worked collaboratively with her peers and other staff members.
Areas for Further Development
As with all student teachers, there are areas for Ms. Heim to consider and pursue. Continue to learn more about
differentiation individualizing learning opportunities for students who require it. Continue to learn more about criterionreferenced assessment strategies to inform instruction and to provide information to students.
Concluding Comments
Ms. Heim presents as a young woman who possesses many qualities that will allow her to become an excellent member
of the teaching profession. Her ability to plan and deliver lessons, her ability to manage students with consistent
behaviour expectations, and her respectful way of interacting with students have been appreciated by her sponsor teacher
and her supervisor. She will make an excellent addition to a school staff.
