Self-Evaluation of a Lesson Plan Taught

Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow

Intern Name: Olivia Kinert
Date of Lesson Taught: May 11, 2016
Cooperating Teacher: Ms. Everton
Cooperating School: Tallwood Elementary School
Subject Taught: Reading
Grade: 1st Grade
Time of Day: Late Morning-Early Afternoon
1. What steps did you go through to create this lesson? With whom did you talk, discuss,
or edit your lesson?
Ms. Everton and I discussed what we wanted to pull out of the students and what we
wanted to push with them, outside from the normal standards that I have worked with
them on day to day. Since it is nearing the end of the school year, we picked out
difficult reading levels, but also difficult tasks that will challenge them in independently
solving a high level thinking task.
2. How did the SOLs and Objectives help focus your instruction?
The objectives helped me focus my lesson, because I could easily identify what needed
to be accomplished by the students and then from there, how much farther I could
push them. They help you focus on the needs, and then head in a direction for what
you want from them, especially this late in the school year.
3. What parts of the instructional plan worked as you anticipated?
With this group, due to the fact that they were the highest reading group, were capable
of efficiently processing the story and then carrying on a conversation that identified
everything that I needed from them. They were strongly able to comprehend the story;
this is great because it was the highest level they had yet to read!
4. What, if any, adjustments needed to be made once you began?
Once I began, I realized that some of the students needed help with more of the words
than expected. Though, it was usually the same words that were in question. This just
showed that they were doing well with this new level, and that the challenging parts
were there for a majority of them.
5. How well did you anticipate the materials needed?
With these reading group lessons, not many materials are needed; though, due to the
fact that it is a high level for first grade, some of the students had to share books.
6. How effective was the assessment you chose to use? (If no assessment was used, what
will the future assessment be and how will you gauge its effectiveness?)
The effectiveness was honestly better than I expected. They were able to use an
online program that they love using because it gives them opportunity to show their
creativity. They were willing to do it and to focus on it and to be excited to do their
best on it and to me that counts as a success!
7. To what degree do you feel that this lesson was a success? What evidence do you have
for the success of the lesson? (Hint: Student learning is the key to a lessons success!)

With this lesson, it was a far stretch to see if the group would be able to understand the
story enough to comprehend the lesson that was taught in the story. Though, the fact
that all were able to understand the story was one success, and the second was that
two and almost three of the students were able to get the main idea and lesson of the
story.
8. How did the time spent preparing for your lesson contribute to its success?
I think that because Ive worked with this group the most, I knew where I would be able
to attain their attention and focus and rein them in on a difficult lesson. I thought
about what each kid needed and that I would try to provide throughout the lesson. My
time used on mainly the lesson, because I know my students and their capabilities.
9. If you could do this lesson again with the same students, would you do anything
differently? If so, what?
If I were able to do this lesson again, I would have tried to get the students more
involved in an active way so that they might be able to be more engaged for longer
with the hopes that more of them would be able to comprehend the lesson of the story.
Additionally I would try to get individual time with each student to try and see where
their head is at with understanding the goal of this lesson.
10.Any last comments/reflections about your lesson?
Im proud of my students and am excited for you to see one of their Wixises.
